Benefits of Yoga

Yoga as a science has been known and practiced for decades in India and all over the world. Yoga works well for the entire bodily and spiritual system; it has shown to have positive effects on the mind, on the body as well as the soul.

There are many forms of yoga for different individuals as the requirements of the mind and body on individual basis would vary. All the forms of yoga would work to make the mind and body united. There are numerous branches of yoga, such as karma yoga, raja yoga and bhakti yoga to name a few. Raja yoga deals with focus in meditation, karma yoga believes that what we may experience today is the consequence of our past actions and bhakti yoga is focused on channelling of emotions in a positive manner.

Some well known benefits of yoga are-

Physical benefits of yoga-

  1. Yoga aids in the enhancement of energy levels in an individual. Breath control or pranayama, yoga exercises and the usage of yoga body locks or bandhas all work to activate and balance the energy channels. Yoga results in enhanced power and vitality which helps one to maximise ones potential to the most.
  2. Yoga helps in the building up of overall strength. Along with physical strength yoga also gives an individual strength in the immune system, digestive system, nervous system, circulatory system, reproductive system and the respiratory system.
  3. Yoga helps in the curing of various diseases and health ailments as it boosts up the immune system. It also promotes longevity. Yoga purifies the blood and improves blood circulation.
  4. The postures or the asanas which are apart of yoga give flexibility to the practitioner of yoga. When an individual derives flexibility he/she also works to avoid numerous injuries and also improves the joints, muscles and the tendons.

Mental benefits of yoga-

  1. Yoga aids in brain development. The breathing exercises and meditation facilitate the development of the parts in the brain which are usually dormant. When these parts of the brain get activated the power of intuition is also enhanced. Yoga practitioners have shown to have clarity of thoughts.
  2. Yoga brings about enhanced levels of concentration. When a person performs yoga meditation, he/she is meant to focus either on a single object or specific mantra. With sound vibrations of the mantra the power of concentration and one pointed attention is known to increase.
  3. With yoga meditation, one is made to look within. This technique brings about awareness. With awareness one can become sharper in the thought process when the dualistic mind is conquered.

Emotional benefits of yoga-

  1. The mind is shown to be much calmer and serene with yoga. One becomes content with what one has with yearnings for materialistic things reduced. With yoga one becomes happy and joyful from within. The real meaning of life becomes apparent with yoga.
  2. Yoga develops feelings of compassion, mindedness, generosity and thoughtfulness in an individual.

With the practice of yoga one can reap in numerous benefits both for the body and the spirit. One can improve ones overall health with practice of yoga.
