Yoga is a Sanskrit word and means to unite the mind body and spirit. Yoga is not just physical exercise, but it is a lifestyle practice. It includes training your mind, body and breathing while connecting with your spirituality.

How to begin yoga?

Find a yoga guide

Many community centers and gyms offer yoga classes. You may also look out for a yoga studio, yoga instructor or other private beginning yoga classes in your neighborhood. You can search the net and collect information on yoga for beginners. You can try a beginning yoga DVD, yoga books or a beginning yoga video to supplement your knowledge beginning yoga positions and beginning yoga stretches.

Yoga type

You should research on different types of yoga. See if you want a fast paced yoga or gentle yoga. Hata yoga or vinyasa are good yoga for beginners. 

Yoga clothes

Dress comfortably in clothes that allow you to move freely and stretch. Your yoga clothes can include stretchy shorts, pants, a T shirt or tank tops are best. Try to use cotton clothes as they will allow your body to breathe. Yoga is mostly practiced barefoot, but you can wear shoes that are comfortable and flexible.

Yoga equipment

If you are doing yoga on a carpet, you will not need any yoga equipment. You can buy yoga mat or sticky mat for a good grip while you do your poses. You can also buy yoga ball for certain exercises of stretching.

Precaution

Before beginning yoga, you should talk to your doctor about any health problem. Inform your yoga instructor about any health problem before the class begins. Your instructor will be in a position to give you some modified poses for your special needs.

Points to consider before beginning yoga routine

Break your schedule

You can break down your yoga sessions into different work out sessions. This way you will not find it burdensome at the beginning when you are not accustomed to yoga.

Yoga time

Check out what kind of yoga and time suites you best. Experiment with different timings as in the morning, evening or at bed time.

Work buddy

You can find some one to do yoga exercises along with you. This will help you to stay motivated and you will not miss your workout. You can compare tips on eating, exercise etc and evaluate the yoga poses.

Consistency

You will have to be consistent if you want to derive the benefits of yoga. You should at least do yoga exercises at last 3 times in a week. If you follow this your body will release endorphins and you will greatly benefit from different yoga postures. 

Goals

You should set some goals for your yoga exercise. This will break the monotony and help you to focus on yoga. You can include power yoga for better cardiovascular workout, gentle yoga for good sleep and so on.
