The experience of labour and delivery is different for every woman and in every pregnancy. The recovery period after a vaginal delivery depends on various factors. Most women experience extreme fatigue after a vaginal delivery. The level of fatigue again depends on how many hours you spent in labour and your overall health.

Recovery will depend on your overall labour experience and the amount of tearing encountered during labour. An uncomplicated vaginal birth will result in a rapid recovery.

Recovery becomes difficult if you had a difficult birth or if your spent a lot of time on bed rest. It also depends on how much energy you have post labour and delivery.

Recovery also depends on whether or not this is your first child. If you have other children to look after, then you are most likely to be exhausted for a longer period.

Women after delivery will undergo a lot of physical and emotional changes and will require a lot of adjustment on that front. Due to the changes in hormone levels you will be emotional and may end up being very anxious on taking up the role of motherhood.

It is important to let your body heal physically before you resume intercourse with your spouse and husband. You should avoid any kind of strenuous activity and exercise for about 6 weeks after delivery. Your doctor may also ask you not to drive for a couple of days after delivery.

Some woman may face post partum depression after delivery. For some women, it is a potential post delivery. About 10-20 per cent of women will experience baby blues post delivery that could become more severe called as post partum depression. Post partum depression can last for several weeks or months after delivery and it is important to treat it as soon as possible.

For some women, postpartum depression is most likely to occur as a post delivery complication. About 10-20 percent of women experience some form of stress or depression after delivery. Sometimes it may become more severe, and this is formally described as post partum depression. The key to successful recovery of post partum depression is to identify the symptoms early as possible.

Common symptoms of post partum depression are:

  • Decrease in concentration
  • Crying easily and frequently
  • Feeling guilty or incapable of handling motherhood
  • Fearful of harming your baby
  • Sleeping troubles
  • A sense of helplessness or feeling suicidal
  • Feeling a loss of control
  • Fatigue
  • Constantly feeling moody or sad

The good news is that with early treatment and care, women can recover from postpartum depression completely.

Exercise after a vaginal delivery

Exercising after delivery is very important after pregnancy and delivery. Women who have had a vaginal delivery can resume to exercising sooner than those who have had a caesarean section.  Usually it is safe to start exercising after 6 weeks from delivery. Some women start within few days of delivery. Walking is a good way to start off with.  You can also do some stretches or mild aerobics.
