Vaginal delivery is a natural way to give birth. There are many advantages associated with a vaginal delivery. They are listed below:

  • During a vaginal birth, the woman is an active participant in the childbirth process and will have a sense of accomplishment and empowerment.
  • Recovery period is quicker with a vaginal birth and you will experience less postpartum pain.
  • Your stay at the hospital will be shorter with a vaginal birth.
  • Babies born through a vaginal birth are less likely to have respiratory problems such as transient tachypnea of the neonate or TTN. However, this isn’t a serious problem as it clears up in 2-3 days of treatment.
  • Babies born vaginally are less prone to developing asthma, lactose intolerance and food allergies later in life.  This could because the baby is exposed to some useful bacteria in the birth canal.
  • With vaginal delivery, labour in future pregnancies moves quicker and may be shorter.
  • Breastfeeding can be started as soon as the baby is out in vaginal delivery than with babies born with a caesarean section.
  • Women who’ve had a vaginal delivery are at a lower risk of having a hemorrhage, blood clots and damage to your internal organs.
  • Vaginal birth makes it easier to bond with your baby because you can have immediate contact with your baby.
  • Women who have undergone vaginal delivery tend to gain less weight around tummy and get back to shape (http://www.hoodiabalance.com/?aid=457522) sooner.

Some of the disadvantages with a vaginal birth are:

  • Some women may get anxious or go through emotional turmoil because of fear of childbirth.
  • With a vaginal birth, some unforeseen complication can occur during the birth process, such as hemorrhage.
  • There is a risk of the perineum tearing with a vaginal birth. The tearing can be minor or could tear into your rectum which can take a lot of time to heal.gen
  • During vaginal delivery, your baby could face oxygen deficiency due to cord compression or other problems during labour and delivery.
  • While passing through the birth canal, the baby can experience physical trauma such as bruising, swelling or seldom broken bones. The risk of physical trauma increases in forceps or vaccum delivery.
  • There could be an increased chance of a pelvic organ prolapse after a vaginal delivery.
  • Very seldom, uterine inversion can occur after a vaginal birth. This is a serious complication and if not treated immediately could lead to severe bleeding and shock and may result in the death of the mother.
  • During a vaginal delivery, some women may experience a tear or episiotomy and this could cause pain while having intercourse during the first three months of your baby.
  • Some women suffering from tailbone problem can injury their tailbone during vaginal delivery. This can happen specially if you have a small pelvis and your baby is very large.
  • It has been reported, that women with vaginal delivery have greater chances of urinary incontinence, which is urine leaks.  This happens with prolonged pushing or having a large baby during a vaginal delivery.
