If your pregnancy is progressing normally and if you have a low risk pregnancy then travelling shouldn’t be a problem. But before you travel make sure you consult with your doctor. If your doctor gives his consent then you can go ahead with your travel plans.

The best time to travel during pregnancy is in the second trimester.  By this time your morning sickness would have subsided and you feel be in better spirits. Again in the third trimester you will need to restrict your travelling. During the third trimester moving around and sitting for long periods will be difficult and as you progress towards your due date you may get into labour any moment, so it is better to restrict travelling at this stage.

But before you travel you will need to follow certain guidelines, such as:

  • While travelling it is important to stop and take breaks. Especially if you are on a long road journey. Plan for breaks ahead of time so you won’t feel rushed for time. Taking breaks will help ease any kind of discomfort you may be feeling. During breaks make sure you use the bathroom and do some stretches.
  • It is better if you pack your own snacks for the journey especially if you still experiencing morning sickness. Also, if you are travelling by air, then avoid eating airline food as it is loaded with salt and will make you feel bloated and cause you discomfort. And it is handy to have some snacks with you in case you get a hunger pang.
  • Make sure you have your doctor’s phone number stored in your phone, in case of an emergency. If some unfortunate event occurs, you can immediately call your doctor for their advice.
  • It is important to remain hydrated during pregnancy and therefore, it is advisable to carry a lot of fluids along with you on your journey.

Car travel during pregnancy

It can be very taxing to travel by car during pregnancy, especially if the journey is long. Try to restrict car travel to 5-6 hrs each day and take frequent breaks in between. Avoid travelling by car if the journey is long and choose to travel by plane.

During your car journey, make sure you wear your seat belt for the safety of both the child and yourself. The shoulder belt should sit between your breast and the lap strip should rest underneath your belly. This will keep you safe during your journey.

Air bag is another safety measure that should be installed in the car, if a pregnant woman is travelling.

Suppose during your journey you encounter an accident, and then make sure you seek medical assistance immediately. It is better to get yourself assessed to ensure that the accident hasn’t harmed you or the baby.  You must consult a doctor, if you have abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, head injury or regular contractions after the accident.

Airplane travel during pregnancy

Travelling by airplane is safe during pregnancy. But before your travel, make sure you check with the airline for the rules and regulations they have for pregnant women. Most women can travel by plane without any hassle till about 36 weeks of pregnancy.
