Most women when they find out that they’re pregnant are not sure of the safety of having sex during pregnancy. Although, pregnancy brings about a lot of emotional and physical changes in the body, it is safe to have sexual intercourse during pregnancy only if you are doing well and if your pregnancy is progressing normally.

During pregnancy it is possible for you or your partner to have no interest in performing sex. Especially for a woman, during her first trimester experiences nausea and tiredness which is bound to reduce your sexual desires. But you will feel much better in your second trimester and you may feel the need to have sex. Again, in the last trimester you will have difficulties due to your huge belly and may lack interest in sex.

In fact it is said that sex during pregnancy is a very enjoyable and pleasurable experience. It is because of the hormonal changes in the body. During pregnancy, hormone (progesterone and estrogen) levels increases in the body and creates a feeling of wellbeing and contentment.  The result of these increased levels of hormones is glowing skin and shiny hair. These physical changes can result in a great physical relationship with your spouse during pregnancy.

When can you have sex?

You can do it anytime as long as your pregnancy is progressing normally. And you are mentally ok with doing it. Some women fear that they will hurt their baby or may feel too tired to indulge in sex.

When you shouldn’t be having sex?

·         Your doctor has advised against having sex during your pregnancy.

·         If you have a history of premature birth or labor in your previous pregnancies.

·         If you have placenta previa (where the cervix is being closed partially or completely by the placenta).

·         If your water has broken during pregnancy.

·         If you are experiencing bleeding during the pregnancy.

·         If you or your partner have a STD (sexually transmitted disease).

What are the benefits of sex during pregnancy?

  • Sex during pregnancy improves the physical and emotional bond that you and your partner share. This is very important as you both are going to become parents and the closer you the better it will be in bringing up the child.
  • It helps prepare the pelvic muscles for childbirth. Sex will keep your pelvic muscles strong and toned up that will help during labor.
  • Enjoyment, if you are happy during your pregnancy it will help in your overall well being and also will help with the fetal growth.

Sex can improve the bond that you share with your partner, but not everyone seems to enjoy sexual intercourse during their pregnancy. The best approach is to communicate openly with your partner and develop your emotional relationship with him. A close bond is developed through other means such as discussing parenthood, how you will bring up the child, baby names etc. rather than just focusing on a physical relationship.
