As soon as you think you are pregnant get a pregnancy test done. Nowadays pregnancy kits are readily available in the pharmacy and you can use them to test if you are pregnant or not. If the test results are positive then you should meet your gynecologist as soon as you can. Your doctor will then examine you to confirm your pregnancy and will advice you on antenatal care.
One of the earliest signs of pregnancy is a missed period, especially among those women who have a regular monthly period. Some signs of pregnancy are:
- You may feel sick, in the sense will have a sense of nausea and may want to throw up when you eat or smell a particular kind of food. Sometimes you may feel sick in the morning as well. Consult your doctor if you feel sick all the time.
- Your breasts will feel tender and may become larger. Your nipples may become darker and may stand out.
- You will feel like urinating more often. You may wake up in the night as well to visit the toilet.
- You may experience constipation.
- You may have an increased vaginal discharge. You will not have any pain or irritation associated with it.
- You may feel tired and exhausted.
- You might have sudden occurrence of acne on your face.
- You may have a strange taste in the mouth.
- You may suddenly stop eating and drinking certain foods like onions or garlic.
Once you experience these signs then do a pregnancy test to confirm if you are pregnant. The pregnancy test will require a urine sample from the first day of your missed period. You can collect the urine at any time of the day, but preferably the first morning urine sample. Before taking the test, ensure that the container that you will use for collecting the sample is clean and free from any soap. You can either take the test at a clinic or hospital or purchase a do-it yourself pregnancy kit from a pharmacy.
Usually the results are accurate. In case, you are not sure, you can try the test again after a week or go to your doctor.
If the results are positive you may feel very happy and ecstatic. If it’s negative then don’t lose heart. You may have planned a pregnancy and it didn’t happen, but try again and you may succeed. If the pregnancy wasn’t planned you may be confused. Just give yourself some time and then you will be able to adjust to the idea of becoming a parent.
Once you know you are pregnant, share the news with your family and friends, as they will be helpful with and during your pregnancy. Family and friends become very caring once they know you are pregnant. And this is important for a smooth and stress free pregnancy. Don’t forget to take all the antenatal care required for you and the baby. After all the amount of care you take will only be good for your baby and its growth. Pregnancy testing should be done as soon as possible to establish your pregnancy.
