At the end of the pregnancy you will feel very uncomfortable and tired. The only thing that you would wish is for the baby to come out. Realistically speaking there is no sure shot way to induce labor until and unless your baby is really ready to come out. But yet there is no harm in trying some techniques to start labor.

Remember that every minute the baby spends in the womb is important for its development and maturity. Therefore, it is better to try any natural labor inducing method only after 38 weeks of pregnancy.

Here are some natural inducing techniques for labor:

  • Walking -Walking will not start labor as such but will encourage labor to progress if you have started contraction early in pregnancy. Walking also helps to get the baby in the head down position and also will help dilate the cervix.
  • Sex - During pregnancy, sex is one of the best ways to induce labor naturally during the later stages of pregnancy. This is because of the men’s semen that contains prostaglandins that help in dilating and thinning of the cervix. Sex also helps in relieving any stress for both the parents to be.
  • Evening Primrose Oil - EPO oil contains the precursor to prostaglandins which help ripen your cervix. Rubbing the oil directly on the cervix area during the later stages of pregnancy can help the cervix to dilate and get thin, thereby inducing labor.
  • Castor Oil - Many people may recommend using castor oil to induce labor, but it actually doesn’t induce labor. It is a laxative and will help stimulate the bowels. This can sometimes irritate your uterus that could cause contractions most likely, when you are already slightly dilated. Otherwise, you may just end up sitting on the toilet seat for a while.
  • Spicy foods - Spicy foods also have the same effects of castor oil but is a more gentle way of stimulating the bowels.
  • Blue and Black Cohosh -These are herbal remedies that can be used to help induce labor or help make stronger contractions. But before using them you should always consult your doctor or midwife or a qualified herbal or health care professional. Some studies have shown that consuming blue cohosh may damage your baby's heart or could lead to uncontrollable hemorrhaging in the mother.
  • Aromatherapy -Certain essential oils helps promote or encourage labor contractions in women. You add a few drops to your shower, especially clary sage helps.
  • Acupuncture and Massage - There are many points in the body that can help induce labor. You can stimulate these points through massaging or acupuncture with the help of a qualified masseuse or acupuncturist. Some women go into labor just by relaxing and taking it easy. Sometimes stress and anxiety can prevent you from going into labor, therefore it is vital to be stress free. A massage can help as it allows your body to relax enough therefore encouraging labor and delivery.
