Thinning of bones after the age of 30 is a natural process. This often leads to development of a painful disease called osteoporosis in many people. It has been found in U.S that almost 80% people above the age of 60 suffer from this disease. So nowadays, people look for options on how to prevent osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a serious condition of porous bones that results into tremendous pain with fractures. In such a condition, the bone mineral density (BDM) decreases, the bone micro architecture gets reduced and the proteins present in the bones get altered.
Osteoporosis can be classified as primary type 1 or type 2 and secondary osteoporosis. Primary type1 osteoporosis is quite common in women. It generally occurs after menopause and so is also known postmenopausal osteoporosis. The primary type 2 osteoporosis usually occurs at the age of 75 and older. It is seen in both women and men in a 2:1 ratio. Secondary osteoporosis can occur at any age and affects both female and male equally.
Although this is a serious disease, there are many preventive measures and treatments available for this disease. Individuals, especially women need to take care of themselves as they progress towards aging. Here are some preventive measures that can help a lot to avoid osteoporosis.
How to Prevent Osteoporosis
· Stop Taking Carbonated Beverages: Champagne, sparkling water, and soft drinks are some of the carbonated beverages that filter out calcium from your bones. Avoid taking such carbonated drinks as they contain excess of phosphate in it which accelerates urinary calcium loss.
· Proper Calcium Intake: Add calcium rich food in your diet. At every age, a certain amount of calcium is essential for proper maintenance of the body. If your body is lacking calcium, then you can also go for calcium supplements to prevent osteoporosis.
· Get Some Vitamin D: Vitamin D is essential for bones as it helps in absorption of calcium by the bones. Deficiency of this vitamin also leads to osteoporosis. So if required, go for Vitamin D supplements. It is also vital for modulation of the immune system, autoimmune disorders and depression.
· Reduce the Intake of Proteins: Excess of protein intake leads to calcium loss through urine. A normal body requires only 2 to 4 ounces of lean protein, three times a day. Most of the American people undergo a diet that contains three times of this protein.
· Avoid Caffeine: Caffeine leads to loss of calcium through urine. With each cup of coffee, an individual looses almost 150mg of calcium. So if you are a regular coffee drinker, increase your calcium intake.
· Regularly get your Hormones Checked: Get your hormones checked at regular intervals. Decline in some specific hormones like estrogen is the most common reason for bone loss. The risk of osteoporosis increases after menopause in women and andropause in men.
“How to prevent osteoporosis” is a question that bothers most of the people. If someone follows a healthy diet, exercise regularly and get their bones tested at regular intervals after a certain age, prevention of osteoporosis is possible.
