What are hot flashes?
You may experience a sudden, intense and hot feeling on your face or upper part of your body. There is no mistake, it is HOT FLASH! It may be accompanied by rapid heart beating, sweating and nausea. You may also experience some dizziness, anxiety, headache, weakness and suffocation some times. A hot flash will leave you reddened and perspiring as it is followed by a flush. Some women may even experience an aura, some uneasy feeling just before a hot flash.
Causes of hot flashes In women
- Usually caused due to hormonal changes
- Hot flashes after menopause are very common
- Hectic lifestyle and over dose of caffeine, hot drinks, alcohol and spicy food
- Smoking as it reduces the ability of blood vessels to radiate heat
- Medication
Generally women who approach menopause suffer from hot flashes after menopause. Women taking treatment for breast cancer have more probability from suffering from hot flashes. Also women taking tamoxifen experience them more often. It may last for few seconds or few minutes. It usually occurs during morning or evening. The hot flash may be mild or severe depending upon the amount of heat in the body.

You should try to keep your natural body temperature under check. Medicines are not always very helpful.

- You should make attempts to identify your trigger for hot flash. Always keep a record of what you were doing and eating when it occurs. Hot flash triggers can be any one or a combination of the following.
- Alcohol
- Very hot food
- Caffeine
- Diet pills
- Spicy food
- Smoking
- Hot weather
- Dress according to the weather and avoid overdressing
- Do not wear wool and synthetic clothes
- Always wear cotton and linen as it allows your body to breathe easily
- Avoid turtle neck clothes and stick to open neck clothes
- Try to be in open air as often as you can and lower the thermostat
- Use cotton sheets at night and make sure you wear cotton night clothes
- Take cold showers before going to bed as it will lower your body temperature
- Exercise regularly
- Reduce stress and try some relaxation methods like yoga, meditation, massage, etc
- Include soy and herbal remedies in your diet
Hot flash remedies
You should take medical help if lifestyle changes, nutrition and other alternatives do not work. Consult your doctor and take medical advice.
- Blood pressure lowering medicines like clonidine and aldomet (under medical guidance)
- Low doses of antidepressants and mild sedatives
- Estrogen therapy
