Handling Diarrhea during Pregnancy

 Handling diarrhea during pregnancy is the important issue to be solved for the pregnant woman. Diarrhea is defined as loose and frequent bowel movements.

Causes of Diarrhea during Pregnancy

  • Hormone fluctuation during pregnancy is one of the important causes of diarrhea in pregnant woman.
  • Sometimes, diarrhea may cause due to the food one is eating and the extra water drinking, or the pregnancy workouts one has started.  
  • Food poisoning, simple stomach flu, intestinal parasites, etc. may be sometimes that have caused the diarrhea for a pregnant woman.
  • If you suspect any of the above cases, call your practitioner so you can be treated properly.

 

Handling Diarrhea during Pregnancy

  • Diarrhea is known to be the less common disorder as compared to constipation during pregnancy.
  • Generally, diarrhea doesn't last for a long period of time. It does not persist for more than two days.
  • Diarrhea can lead to dehydration which is known to be a major risk factor for the baby. For this reason alone, contacting doctor is the most important fact in handling diarrhea during pregnancy.
  • Diarrhea in early pregnancy cause uncomfortable cramping which can result in felling weak and tired.
  • Diarrhea in late pregnancy normally starts right before the labor. This can be a body's way of getting ready for delivery. Severe diarrhea may result from infection or food poisoning. Sometimes, sugar free candies or other artificial products can cause bowel problems in late pregnancy.
  • Typically, women experiencing diarrhea have other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and abdominal bloating.
  • Keep away from foods that can cause the problem of diarrhea. E.g. dried fatty fruits or spicy foods, milk, bananas, applesauce, rice, toast, etc.
  • Avoid high-sugar drinks which can draw water into your intestine, making diarrhea last for a longer time.
  • Make sure to stay away from diarrhea causing medications which contain sodium or sodium bicarbonate.
  • Keep in mind that if diarrhea is in the mild case, it is not to worry about. Severe diarrhea or stools with blood, mucus, or purely liquid are a sign of dangerous situation.

Treating Diarrhea during Pregnancy

  • If you suffer from diarrhea during pregnancy, make sure that you remain hydrated.
  • Drink plenty of water along with hydrating fluids like Gatorade
  • If you experience diarrhea with pain or fever, contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

Preventing Diarrhea during Pregnancy

  • You can prevent diarrhea by eating well balanced diet which contains plenty of fiber.
  • Many pregnant women find they are constipated because of their prenatal vitamins, which contain higher levels of iron which cause diarrhea.
  • Eat foods reach in fiber which includes fruits and vegetables and salad. Drink prune juice during pregnancy, which can help to lessen the constipation during pregnancy. Eating foods rich in fiber and drinking water will help to reduce the side effects of constipation, which are known to be hemorrhoids during pregnancy.
  • The above tips will help to prevent diarrhea in pregnancy. You should also avoid food that can trigger the diarrhea such as spicy foods, and milk.

 

Keep in mind that diarrhea and pregnancy is not a happy combination, so contacting your doctor is the best way of handling diarrhea during pregnancy.
