Everyone suffers from gastric problems some or the other time, but gastric problems during pregnancy are the most commonly occurring condition which has to be solved properly. According to studies, it is known that normal people produce 2-3 pints of gas and pass this gas approximately 15 times a day. This frequency increases in case of pregnant women. The reason and treatment for gastric problems during pregnancy are mentioned as below:

Gastric Problem during Pregnancy

Gas is basically a collection of odorless vapors which contain carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen along with some amount of methane in it. The odor of the gas comes due to the presence of bacteria in the large intestine which releases small amounts of gases.

Gas in the digestive tract including the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine comes from the following two sources. These include:

  • Swallowed air
  • Breakdown of certain undigested foods

It is also known to be one of the symptoms of pregnancy. This takes place due to increase in the hormone level of progesterone at the beginning of early pregnancy. Progesterone relaxes the smooth muscle tissue present in the body including the digestive tract. This results into slow down of digestion process and so more gas production takes place in the large intestine.

Treatment of Gastric Problem during Pregnancy

The gastric problems during pregnancy can be treated using the following methods:

·         Eat regularly but in terms of small meals rather than taking larger meals

·         Eat and chew slowly and also avoid talking or gulping while eating

·         Avoid drinking water while having a meal, instead drink plenty of water between two meals

·         Try to avoid fizzy or carbonated drinks like coke

·         Put the legs up to reduce the pressure from abdomen. This will help digestion.

·         Sit upright for eating or drinking

·         Do not wear tight clothes or belts and choose comfortable clothing

·         Avoid chewing gum

·         Avoid sucking lollies

·         Avoid artificial sweeteners and diet drinks

·         Try to do exercise like brisk walking after a meal for at least 20 minutes

·         Take peppermint tea to provide relief from gastric problems

·         Carry out the relaxation activity like palates or yoga to reduce this problem

Along with this, you can avoid consuming food products that can lead to gastric problems during pregnancy:

·         Apples

·         Pears

·         Prunes

·         Beans & other legumes

·         Broccoli

·         Brussel Sprouts

·         Asparagus

·         Cabbage

·         Milk or cheese

·         Onions

·         Peaches

·         Cauliflower

Along with this, keep in mind that fatty and fried foods have a tendency to slow down the digestion process, so try and avoid it. If you take a suggestion of your doctor on this, your doctor will definitely give you the diet plan that can cause less gas.

There are several nonprescription medicines available in the market which can reduce this problem. These include antacids with simethicone such as Mylanta II, Maalox II, and Di-Gel, which contain simethicone, a foaming agent which joins the gas bubbles in the stomach and makes the person belch it away. In this way we can conclude that gastric problem during pregnancy can be sorted out by taking proper care and guidance of the doctor.
