Breast yeast infection is the fungus overgrowth under or around the nipples in women due to the dampness and wetness inherent in that area.  Candida, known by the name of Monilla or Thrush is a fungus which lives on the surface of the body, triggered by the moistness on the sweat bearing surface. The infection on the nipples of breast is the natural outcome of pregnancy and breast feeding in women. The fungus can be transferred from the mucous membrane of the infant to the nipples of the mother. The inflammation results in excruciating pain in and around nipples, soreness and redness in the affected region.

Symptoms of breast yeast infection:

  • Constant itching and burning sensation on the breast
  • Redness and swelling on the nipples
  • If the normal soreness creams are not bearing the desired result, yeast infection can be the cause.
  • If the baby whom the mother is feeding is suffering from oral thrush, appearance of cotton white layer on the tongue is the sign
  • The completion of the intake of antibiotic cycle is recent
  • Pain-free breast feeding suddenly resulting in swelling of the nipples.

Preventive measures which should be incorporated:

  • Use of 100% cotton brassiere
  • Regular drying of nipples after each session of breast feeding
  • Use of disinfectant washed and sun dried inner wears
  • Use of washed pumps if they are used
  • If the nipples are exposed to sunlight for few seconds every day, the chances of yeast infection are visibly reduced
  • Usage of plastic breast pads should be avoided.

Cure of breast yeast infection:

  • Antifungal spray: Any homeopathic product that fights multiple species of yeast infection is easily available in the market. Antibiotics should not be consumed along with the application of any spray.
  • Application of an antifungal cream: Creams like mycostatin, clotrimazole and myconazole reduces the layer of yeast infection on the nipples.
  • Yogurt: Intake of yoghurt on regular basis aids the body in fighting the development of infection.
  • Gentian violet: Application of 0.25 to 0.5 percent of this solution on the nipples helps in fighting the yeast infection. Along with nipples few drops of this solution should be applied inside the mouth of the infant.

Breast yeast infection is common during the first six months of breast feeding and pregnancy. Puberty can also give rise to such forms of infection on the breast. Effective cure should be taken in order to avoid the infection. If redness and pain persists after the employment of natural methods, a doctor should be immediately consulted.
