Types of breast cancer

There are different types of breast cancer and they are classified according to their histological appearance.

1.     Carcinoma-ductal- it starts in the tubes that carry milk from the breast to the nipples.

2.     Carcinoma –lobular- it starts in the parts of breast called lobules which are responsible to produce milk.

Breast cancer symptoms

1.     The first symptom of breast cancer is the typical lump formation. Nearly all the breast cancers are discovered this way

2.     Mammogram is the first medical sign of breast cancer

3.     Changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, spontaneous single nipple discharge

4.     In case of inflammatory breast cancer, cancer cells invade the dermal lymphatics and resemble skin inflammation

5.     There is some pain, swelling, warmth and redness throughout the breast and there is orange peel texture

6.     Breast cancer may show metastatic symptoms, meaning cancer in other organs have spread to breast

Who can get breast cancer?

1.     There are some risk factors that determine who can get breast cancer. They include females who smoke, obesity, childbearing age, tobacco use and radiation.

Diagnosis of breast cancer

Physical screening like self examination is the best method to diagnose breast cancer. Testing is also necessary to confirm if the lump detected during screening is cancerous.

Breast cancer treatment

Preventing breast cancer is the best thing to do. You cannot change your genetic history but you can control other factors that contribute for the development of breast cancer. For that you need to change your lifestyle and reduce your risk. Breast cancer treatment depends on factors like type and stage of cancer. Cancer treatments normally include:

1.     Chemotherapy is used to kill cancer cells

2.     Radiation therapy is used to destroy cancerous tissues

3.     Surgery to remove cancerous tissues (lumpectomy, mastectomy)

4.     Hormonal therapy to block cancer promoting hormones

5.     Targeted therapy that includes special anti-cancer drugs
