 Family planning is the mantra these days. If you are sexually active and fertile this is for you. The first question that you should ask your self is, do I want to get pregnant at this point of life? If the answer is in negative, you should use some contraception. There are many unplanned pregnancies just because there was no birth control used or birth control was not properly used.

There are so many birth control options available these days which reduce the possibility of becoming pregnant. One thing should be kept in mind, no birth control option offers protection against sexually transmitted diseases. Condom is the only method that provides protection against STD.

Birth control:- Birth control is an important part of family planning. All methods of Birth control are either actions, devices, sexual practices or medications followed in order to prevent or reduce the likelihood of pregnancy.

  1. Prevention of fertilization (contraception)
  2. Prevention of implantation of the fertilized egg (contragestion)

Types of Birth Control:- The direct responsibility of most methods of birth control involves women. You may take the help of your doctor in deciding which type of birth control suites you best. Birth control methods are classified according to the method used, for example if they block sperms (barrier) or hormonal (pill)

  1. Physical method
  2. Barrier method: condom, female condom, contraceptive sponge, cervical cap
  3. Hormonal method: all oral contraceptives, pills with oestrogens and progestins
  4. Ormexloxifene: prevents implant of zygote
  5. Emergency contraception: combined pills, morning pills
  6. Intrauterine methods: copper T (IUD)
  7. Sterilization: surgical tubal ligation for women and vasectomy for men
  8. Behavioral methods: regulating timing or method of intercourse
  9. Coitus interruptus: withdrawal method before ejaculation
  10. Avoiding penovaginal sex: anal sex, oral sex
  11. Total abstinence
  12. Lactational
  13. Induced abortion

Factors that decide the birth control option:- There are many factors that determine the birth control option to be used. Many opt for natural methods like abstinence, behavioral methods as they cost nothing but self control. Some use condoms as they are affordable and effective against STD’s. Hormonal methods like pills are highly effective and cost a lot also they must be purchased and used regularly. Some methods like behavioral methods, tubal litigations are not meant for teenagers.

Side effects of birth control:- There are many side effects of birth control. Majority of them are not serious and can be dealt with some changes in life style. Some side effects may be more serious and you should consult your doctor for evaluation. These serious side effects may be liver disease, stroke, blood clots, high BP or heart problems.

  1. Headache, dizziness
  2. Breast tenderness or swelling
  3. Nausea
  4. Breakthrough bleeding or spotting
  5. Decreased libido
  6. Mood swings
  7. Weight gain
  8. Lighter periods
