People have used birth control methods for thousands of years. The best birth control method is self-restraint as its 100% effective. However, there are several individuals who are active sexually or don’t want to live a life of a celibate. If you are one of these individuals and you aren’t willing to get pregnant anytime soon, then you possibly would like to know the best birth control options available.

Today, there are several different types of birth control methods for both men and women in the market. However, there are far more options for women than men. Majority of the methods used to avert pregnancy are nonsurgical, though there are choices regarding surgery to avoid pregnancy.

Using condoms is one of the most common birth control methods. Condoms have been used by males for several years, although now there is also a female condom available in the market. Several people don’t like condoms though, as they feel that they get in the way of sexual pleasure. Thus, several people choose to use other methods to avoid pregnancy.

Another common method which people use to avoid unwanted pregnancies is the birth control pill. Most pills are taken orally on a daily basis by women. These pills contain either progestin and hormones estrogen or just progestin. While the pill is an efficient form of contraception, it’s not the best option for some women who might not be able to take it because of other conditions.

IUD

Another popular method of birth control is the intrauterine device (IUD). This is a small device made of plastic in the shape of a T which is placed inside the uterus by a doctor. There are 2 types of IUDs available. One is Mirena which is implanted in the uterus for up to 5 years and the other is Paragard which comprises copper and could be implanted in the uterus for up to 12 years. Depending on the type you get, these IUDs can last from 5 to 12 years.

Vaginal Ring

The vaginal ring, also known as the Nuva ring is a small ring which is placed in the vagina for 3 weeks. It slips out comfortably in the fourth week. With this ring, you need not think about birth control on a regular basis. The Nuva ring comprises the progestin and the hormones estrogen.

Birth Control Patch and Shot

This small birth control patch is placed unnoticeably on your body for 3 weeks. You must peel off the patch for a week after 3 weeks are over. This is one of the best birth control methods which comprises of progestin and hormones estrogen.

A shot in the arm could be your birth control for 3 months. This birth control shot also called Depo-Provera is a longer birth control method and it contains hormone progestin.

Spermicidal is also another best birth control method. Some people practice abstinence as a way for birth control and others prefer surgical procedures such as vasectomy for a male or tubal ligation for a female. The best one is the one which would be appropriate for you and something that you must discuss openly with your doctor.
