Though weight loss drugs are not generally prescribed for common dieters but the right combination of a weight loss drug, a healthy balanced diet and a proper schedule of exercise will definitely ensure rapid weight loss. You might be finding weight loss drugs quite tempting while undergoing weight loss regimes, but you are suggested to take them only under some special circumstances. So, it is always advisable to consult a doctor before you include the intake of weight loss drugs in your program. You should be taking drugs if only your physician recommends after thoroughly checking up your internal health.

The doctor may consider the following factors before approving the weight loss medicine.

  • You will be prescribed to take the medicine only when all the other ways of weight loss like maintaining a low calorie diet and undergoing rigorous exercise have failed.
  • If you are suffering chronic form of obesity, extreme low calorie diets may bring in health hazards.
  • When your BMI is more than 27 and you are suffering from problems like obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, sleeping disorders etc.
  • When your BMI is greater that 30.

Weight loss drugs are mostly available in the form of appetite suppressants and fat absorbents. Appetite suppressants actually trick the brain by making it feel that the stomach is already full. Under its reaction the brain secretes two chemicals called serotonin and catecholamine that influence the mood and appetite of an individual. The fat absorbent supplements prevent your body from breaking down fats that are taken during meals so that the fat can be flushed out in the process of bowel movement.

A weight loss of around 1 to 2 lbs per week is the standard rate of weight reduction. Weight loss drugs often work effectively to accelerate the speed of weight reduction by 8 % to 10% of the present rate. Though you will come across several weight loss supplements, only few are prescribed and approved by the FDA. In the year 1997, two popular drugs named fenfluramine (Pondimin) and Redux were withdrawn from the market as they were later on tasted to be causing damage to heart valves.

At present there are basically three weight loss medicines approved by the FDA after undergoing stringent scientific tests to prove safety and efficacy in taking the drugs.

Xenical (orlistat) - Xenical (orlistat) is an efficient fat blocker. Under the medication the body does not allow the fat to be completely absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. The strength of dosage is 120 milligrams and should be taken three times a day.

Sibutramine (Meridia) - Sibutramine (Meridia) is generally prescribed with a low calorie diet. It works by influencing the area of the brain that controls hunger. The medicine is to be taken around 5 to 15 milligrams per day.

Phentermine (Adipex-P) – Normally prescribed for a short term program for around 12 weeks. It works well for a temporary weight loss schedule.

There are also several supplements in the market that can be useful for you to reduce your weight. But research is yet to establish whether these weight loss medicines are completely free from serious side effects.
