The Hoodia weight loss process is gradually becoming popular among dieters world wide. You will come across numerous supplements that are made up of Hoodia extracts. Hoodia Gordonii is a wild succulent plant found only in the arid regions of the Kalahari. For centuries bushmen of the Kalahari Desert consumed the bitter stem of the Hoodia Gorondi plant in order to ward off hunger and thirst during long hunting trips.

Though Hoodia Gorondi looks like a cactus but the plant is actually a succulent. It grows in clumps with erect stems. The plant takes almost five years to bear flowers and it is only when the plant can be used as an ingredient for weight loss supplements. The only constituent of the plant that promoters weight loss is the steroidal glycoside which is also termed as "p57".

The following are some facts concerned with the Hoodia plant.

  • There are 13 varieties of Hoodia plant.
  • The efficacy of Hoodia weight loss was first noted in the year 1937 by a Dutch anthropologist who was studying on the livelihood of the Hoodia Bushmen.
  • Phytopharm, a British pharmaceutical company has spent round $20 million on the hoodia research.
  • Hoodia came into popularity when a correspondent of ‘60 minutes’ described how she controlled her thirst and appetite by consuming hoodia extract. She also did not report about any immediate side effects.
  • Hoodia is also one of the ingredients of the popular weight loss pill Trimspa.
  • A study on September 2004 was made on brain research of rats. The study revealed that when the rats where injected with the p57, the brain of the rat responded to altered levels of ATP. ATP is an energy molecule that is believed to influence the hunger. The rat even ate much less than the rats that were given plesbo injections.
  • Phytopharm once conducted a trial consisting of 18 human beings. The trial revealed that consumption of Hoodia may reduce the consumption of food by 1000 calories than those of the plesbo group.

Hoodia is said to trick the brain by sending signals which induce the brain to think that the stomach is already full. Though the side effects related to hoodia plant is yet to be confirmed but the following may be the possible side effects of hoodia weight loss.

  • The long term side effects of hoodia are still unknown so pregnant ladies and children should stay away from consuming it.
