The potential Hoodia side effects are yet to be established. At present no negative side effects have been proved yet by FDA and the herbal extract is much in use by dieters now a days. The very proposition of hoodia being a safe appetite suppressant is mainly due to the usage of the plant by the Bushmen of the San tribe for thousands of years of the Kalahari Desert in South Africa. The Bushmen used to consume the raw stem of the herb in order to ward off the hunger and thirst for long hours of laborious hunting trips. Since the discovery of the plant by a Dutch anthropologist in the year 1937, extensive research works have been conducted to find out the effectiveness in weight loss and side effects related to the Hoodia herb.
Even though Hoodia may not cause fatal side effects like the banned weight loss pill named Ephedra, but according to a researcher named Jasjit S. Bindra the following are the proposed Hoodia side effects.
- The only active ingredient of the Hoodia plant that promotes weight loss is the steroidal glycoside or the "p57". The excess of "p57" content which can not be easily removed from the body may affect the lever function.
- Even though the ancestors of the San Bushmen had relied on this herb in order to stay away from thirst and appetite for long hours of hunting trips, the consumption of hoodia may not be as safe for modern men as it was for the tribal people. The San Bushmen used to consume the plant only during the hunting time while modern dieters of urban America take it as a regular dietary supplement. The Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert used to lead life in a natural way. They did not used to depend on medical drugs to ward off diseases like mental depressions, high blood pressure and diabetes unlike modern men. The combined effect of the consumption of the herb along with other medicines is still not known and negative side effects may arise due to it.
- The very mechanism of the Hoodia plant, based on which it promotes weight loss is by ‘tricking the brain’ and making it believe that the stomach is already full even if the person has taken only a small quantity of the food can turn out to be dangerous. Dehydration can occur to people who stay without water for several hours due the effect of the plant. Less appetite might lead to almost to the state of starvation which again may result to low metabolic rate.
As a precautionary note, Hoodia can be avoided by children, pregnant women and especially people who are suffering from liver or kidney diseases. Consumption of hoodia in the form of pills or powders is otherwise quite safe for normal dieters having a good physical health. Hoodia Balance is a good appetite suppressant that is made up of pure natural Hoodia Gordonii extracts.
