As obesity is spreading across the western world as an endemic disease, Hoodia is now turning out to be one of the most effective solutions of weight loss. Since the arrival of Hoodia in the world market in 2004, the herb extracts are now extensively used in weight loss supplements. Thousands of dieters are also getting benefited by consuming Hoodia constituted medicinal drugs. The South African herb containing a highly appetite suppressing motivating component called the p57 is now the key to lose weight for many overweighed individuals. Pharmaceutical giants are now investing millions of dollars and scientific resources to taste Hoodia safety and efficacy in reducing weight.

Much of the faith on Hoodia safety is because of the usage of the plant for thousands of years by the San Bushmen. The native African tribe has been safely consuming the plant for centuries in order to stay away from hunger and thirst for millions of years. The correspondent of 60 minutes named Leslie Stahl on consuming the herb reported that she did not undergo any initial side effects. British pharmaceutical company named Phytopharm, who has earned the patent of commercializing Hoodia once, conducted a test along with Unilever to trace out any imminent danger in consuming Hoodia. The test revealed no short term side effects and rather proved that the volunteers who consumed the herb effectively lost more weight than the plesbo group.

Even though no Hoodia side effects are established but the herb is yet to undergo extensive scanning process in order to get approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). The test that was conducted by Phytopharm is unpublished and there is no written document that states Hoodia is absolutely safe for consumption. According to researchers the following can be the potential negative effects of the herb.

  • Long term use of Hoodia may damage the liver.
  • The very mechanism of Hoodia in reducing weight is by tricking the brain and making it believe that the stomach is already full. This may cause sudden drop in the blood sugar level and may harm diabetic patients severely.
  • Hoodia not only reduces appetite but also thirst. People may suffer from dehydration if they do not take water for long hours.
  • The African San Bushmen who consumed the herb without undergoing any negative side effects actually led a very simple life. They were hardly dependent on other drugs that are taken by the modern men for treating disorders like kidney failures, diabetes, blood clotting problems and such. The combined effect of Hoodia and other drugs are still unknown.
  • Pregnant women and lactating mothers should avoid taking up the herb as it might cause harm to the health of the mother as well as the child.

Compared to other supplementary drugs Hoodia is undoubtedly quite safe to consume and effective in reducing weight. Hoodia Balance is a good appetite suppressant that is made up of pure natural Hoodia extracts. Thousands of dieters have reported to be benefited by consuming the drug.
