At present no potential Hoodia dangers are established. The British pharmaceutical firm once conducted a research in order to test the efficacy of weight loss and probable side effects of Hoodia. The tests could not prove any Hoodia danger rather showed that under the influence of the herb individuals consume 1000 calories less than the normal calorie intake per day. But the test was not published and so Hoodia is yet to receive approved written documents that would state the herb to be safe for consumption.

The only published document that deals with Hoodia research is the one that was undertaken by the scientists of Brown University. The experimentation was done on some rats. Few rats were injected with pure Hoodia extract while others were given plesbo injections. The brains of the rats that were under the influence of the plant showed altered levels of ATP. ATP is an energy molecule that controls the area of the brain dealing with mood and appetite. It was seen that the rats that were consuming Hoodia ate much less and lost weight rapidly compared to that of the plesbo group. But the experiment was conducted only to study the appetite reducing mechanism of the plant which barely proved safety in consuming the herb.

Jasjit Bindra, former Hoodia researcher at Pfizer gave indications that the Hoodia may cause lever malfunctioning and also may pose serious threats to patients suffering from diabetes. Hoodia may drop the blood sugar levels as the patients may not be able to respond to the appetite signals under the influence of the herb. The drugs taken to treat kidney disorders, hypertensions, blood clot abnormalities may chemically combine with Hoodia to affect health. The San Bushmen who safely consumed the herb for centuries hardly depended on any other drugs unlike the modern man.

The effects of the Hoodia are still unknown on pregnant ladies and lactating mothers. So, it is always recommended not to take up the Hoodia constituted pill during pregnancy. Excess intake of Hoodia may also cause less intake of food which might lead the body to the condition of starvation. Under such situations the body slows down the metabolic rate which might rather counter affect the weight loss process.

Hoodia suppresses not only appetite but also the desire to drink. Under the influence of Hoodia one can suffer from dehydration if water is not taken for long hours.

All the above proposed dangers of Hoodia are side effects of low intensity compared to other weight reducing substances. Though not yet approved by the FDA, Hoodia can be regarded as one of the safest ways to reduce weight. If you are interested to take up a Hoodia supplement, you may try out Hoodia Balance. The appetite suppressant is quite effective in reducing your weight as it is made up of pure Hoodia extracts.
