Thyroid is a reddish brownish color gland situated at the base of throat underneath the neck surface, divided into two lobes marked right and left which form the shape of a butterfly. Thyroid is a gland which is responsible for the secretion of a hormone called Tyrosine, which controls the normal functioning of metabolic and growth rate especially in teenagers and growing children. To fulfill the function of growth, it requires a chemical known as iodine which is provided by the intake of water and food which supply right amount of iodine in the body. The body contains 50 milligrams of iodine, out of which 1/5 to 1/3 of iodine is found in thyroid. The iodine and tyrosine chemicals combine to form vital hormones for the body.

Function of thyroid: Thyroid gland releases important hormones in the bloodstream which gets carried to the cells. These hormones aid in stimulating growth and metabolism during puberty and other bodily functions. They are responsible for converting oxygen and calories into energy which can be utilized by the body in proportion of the growth requirement. The maturity of body is directly dependent on the supply of these hormones.

Diseases caused by the improper functioning of Thyroid:

Hyperthyroidism: This state occurs due to the overproduction and release of thyroid hormone into the bloodstream due to which the metabolic activity speeds up causing:

  • Irritation
  • Increase in perspiration
  • Irregularity in menstrual cycle
  • Disturbance in sleeping pattern

Hypothyroidism: It is state in which the secretion of thyroid gland in the bloodstream suddenly reduces. Due to this, the usage of the hormone to break down calories into energy is hampered. Both the conditions can result in the formation of a lump at the base of neck known as Goiter which is also caused due to the malnutrition.

Symptoms of the alteration in the normal development of thyroid gland:

  • Sudden gain in weight
  • Excessive fatigue and tiredness
  • Forgetfulness and irregular menstrual cycle: Heavy or very less flow
  • Huskiness in voice and susceptible to cold
  • Sudden weight loss, enlargement in thyroid gland forming a lump
  • Persistent problems in vision and frequent eye irritation
  • Nervousness and extreme heat sensitivity.

Treatment:The two conditions caused due to the malfunctioning of thyroid gland can be treated differently:

Hyperthyroidism: This is generally treated by giving regular doses of a drug called Levothyroxine. Careful monitoring is followed with the initiation of the treatment.

Hypothyroidism: This state is difficult to treat as the doctor supplies the hormone in small quantities according to the body requirement.

Normally, the medication used for the control of thyroid related diseases is expensive but now thyroid can be treated with a natural and herbal method which is effective and balances your pocket. However, a doctor’s advice is recommended at the initial stages of thyroid disturbance.
