What is Thyroid Disease

Thyroid disease is a dysfunction in the neck area where thyroid gland is found below the throat, generally visible as a lump affecting the growth and functioning of body in utilizing and converting calories into energy, causing the overgrowth or under growth of the hormone essentially required for the body. The pituitary gland located in the middle of skull in brain area controls the function of thyroid hormone in bloodstream by adjusting the release of TSH hormone. The two States that generates in the body due to the malfunction of thyroid hormone are Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism.
Hypothyroidism: This state occurs when the secretion and supply of thyroid hormone in the bloodstream is insufficient. The underproduction of thyroid hormone is caused due to the following conditions:
- Deficiency of iodine: The chemical which is supplied with food and water is essential for the formation of thyroid hormone in the body. Deficiency in the amount of iodine supplied in the body can lead to the enlargement of thyroid gland in the interior of neck region. The WTO reports that 100 million people are iodine deficient in the world. This can even lead to the formation of goiter.
- Thyroiditis: This state is caused due to the inflammation in the thyroid gland which affects the normal development of this gland.
- Postpartum thyroiditis: It is a transient phase in which the normal secretion of thyroid hormone into the blood affecting the growth and functioning of the body, this occurs during pregnancy.
- Non-functioning of thyroid gland: This attacks 4,000 newborns according to the American health organization every year. This can create problem in the mental and physical growth of the child.
- Hashimoto’s thyroiditis: It is a hereditary disease of immune system which is painless in nature and character.
Development of hyperthyroidism in the thyroid gland: This state occurs when there is an over secretion of thyroid hormone in the bloodstream. People of all ages and race are prone to this disease. The list of the following conditions which causes this disease are:
- Thyroiditis: It is a disorder which is painless and cause overproduction of thyroid hormone in the body for few weeks or months. This is common disease among women after delivery.
- It is caused due the intake of wrong drugs: Some medicines and syrups like Amiodarone and Lugol’s solution can trigger the over development of thyroid gland.
- Grave’s disease: The enlargement of goiter can lead to the excessive production of thyroid hormone affecting the metabolic rate of body.
- Thyroid cancer: This is caused due to the trigger of carcinogens in the cancerous cells of thyroid gland which result firstly in tumor finally leading to full grown cancer.
