The thyroid gland influences the metabolic processes of our body by producing the thyroid hormones. Thyroid problems can be small and harmless like goiter (enlarged gland) that can be cured without a treatment as well as bigger, like life-threatening cancer. The most common reason behind all thyroid problems is the abnormal production of thyroid hormones.

Over-production of these glands results in a condition called hyperthyroidism and insufficient production of hormones can leads to hypothyroidism. Though the effects of these are really uncomfortable but most of the symptoms can be treated well if are diagnosed properly and on time.

Hyperthyroidism can occur in several ways:

  • Toxic adenomas: This is when the nodules are developed in the thyroid gland which begins to secrete thyroid hormones by upsetting all the body's chemical balance. Sometimes goiters may contain several of these nodules.
  • Graves' disease: The release of excess hormones is triggered by an autoimmune disorder.  For some unknown reason, the body attacks the thyroid, causing it to spill out too much hormone.
  • Subacute thyroiditis: It results in the inflammation of the thyroid that causes the gland to release excess hormones. This results in temporary hyperthyroidism that generally lasts a few weeks but may persist for months.
  • Growth of cancer which is also called Pituitary gland malfunctions in the thyroid gland: There are rare chances of this situation but hyperthyroidism can also develop from these causes. In this case you might have one or more thyroid nodules for several years before they are determined to be cancerous.  People who have received radiation treatment to the head and neck earlier in life, possibly as a remedy for acne, tend to have a higher-than-normal propensity for thyroid cancer.

The symptoms you experience are:

  • Trouble concentrating.
  • Mood swings.
  • Swelling in the neck due to an enlarged thyroid (goitre)
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat.
  • Trembling hands.
  • Excessive sweating.
  • Insomnia - trouble sleeping.
  • Weight loss in spite of increased hunger.
  • Women may experience irregular periods and a lighter menstrual flow.

Hypothyroidism results from an underproduction of thyroid hormones.  Our body requires certain amounts of thyroid hormones to produce energy but since the production is low it drops the energy levels.

Hypothyroidism can result in Hashimoto's thyroiditis: It is an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks thyroid tissue by which the tissue dies stopping the production of hormones.

It poses danger to newborns and infants.  A lack of thyroid hormones in the system at an early age can lead to the development of cretinism which means mental retardation and also dwarfism that results in stunted growth.  Nowadays most infants have their thyroid levels checked routinely soon after birth.  If they are hypothyroid, treatment begins immediately.  In infants, as in adults, hypothyroidism can be due to these causes:

  • A pituitary disorder
  • A defective thyroid
  • Lack of the gland entirely

A hypothyroid infant is unusually inactive and quiet, has a poor appetite and sleeps for excessively long periods of time.

Here the symptoms include:

  • Feeling tired and lacking energy.
  • A tendency to feel the cold more than healthy people.
  • Heart may beat slower.
  • Weight gain and difficulty in losing it.
  • Irregular or heavy periods.
  • A hoarse, croaky voice.
  • Forgetfulness.
  • Depression.
  • Constipation
  • Dry, pale skin and
  • Dry hair

There are some supplements available nowadays; one of the natural once is Thyromine.
