Thyroid Carcinoma is another name of Thyroid cancers. Thyroid cancers are not so common but still around 3% of children and 1.5% of adults are found affected these days. This number is increasing day by day as in most cases thyroid diseases are left undiagnosed. Thyroid diseases are mostly found in females. A very high range of thyroid carcinoma in the world was first discovered in Hawaii among its female Chinese residents.
Causes that leads to Thyroid Carcinoma are:
- X-ray beams are really very harmful any exposure to them by some body parts can be cancerous especially in children. This was found from the past incident of Japan’s atomic bomb blast. It consequences were so bad that around 7% of the population suffered from thyroid cancer afterwards.
- The effect of ionizing radiations can be really hard for the thyroid as it is very sensitive. It also increases the risk of cancer in the thyroid gland.
- Radiotherapy is often suggested for treating severe cases of head or neck cancer but it rather increases the risk of thyroid cancer.
- The technique of therapeutic irradiation was used for some of the body parts since 1920-1960 for treating tumors and conditions like fungus diseases, soar throat, tonsils, enlargement of thymus etc. But it was lately found that around 10% of individuals were affected by thyroid cancer after they crossed the age of 30.
Thyroid caner is not just restricted to the thyroid gland only like other cancers are, as if it starts spreading the lymph, blood vessels, nodes and even nerves are found infected. Recent researches have found cancer cells in bones and lungs either.
There are some types of thyroid cancers too. Some of them are:
- Papillary thyroid cancer: This is the most common of all cancers. Its infection begins slowly and spreads gradually. The beginning is with the follicular cells only that are found in the thyroid. Papillary cancer can be easily treated only if it is diagnosed before it gets severe.
- Anaplastic thyroid cancer: This is not so common and is found in around 2% of infected cases only. In this case too the problem begins in the follicular cells. The cancer cells cannot be recognized easily and are extremely abnormal. They spread rapidly and are difficult to control.
- Medullary thyroid cancer: This type of cancer does not spread in the follicular cells but is found in C cell. It is controllable before it infects other areas of the body.
Basically all thyroid disease are left untreated most of the time which gradually becomes cancerous. The only reason behind is the correct diagnoses of the disease as it gets difficult to give proper treatment without knowing the cause behind. One has to become very clear about the causes, symptoms and treatments even if you begin to get slight infections. Consult you doctor before starting up with anything to cure you minor problems either.
