Hypothyroidism is the disease of the thyroid gland. This condition occurs when the body lacks sufficient thyroid hormone produced. The basic purpose of thyroid hormone is to maintain healthy metabolism inside the body. If the body undergoes a condition of slow metabolism it is quite understood that the person is suffering from hypothyroidism. This problem affects almost around ten percent of women who get to have some degree of thyroid hormone deficiency. The extent of severity depends on the deficiency only.

Most of the time people tend to retain hypothyroid symptoms even when their blood tests indicate the thyroid function to be normal. The symptoms may vary widely. In some cases they are milder but gets chronic when the problem develops gradually.

Some of the general symptoms are: Fatigue, weight gain, swelling in hands and feet, constipation, sluggishness, depression, achy muscles, shortness of breath, dry, brittle hair and skin, goiter/neck enlargement, memory problems, cold intolerance, puffiness in face and eyes, hair loss, tinnitus.

Most chronic symptoms include:

·         It leads to swelling around the eyes. Incase of a person who develops hypothyroid due to Graves' disease may retain eye symptoms such as protrusion of the eyes, the appearance of staring, and impaired movement of the eyes.

·         Hypothyroidism weakens the respiratory muscles decreasing the lung functions. It generally leads to swelling of the tongue and sleep apnea, a condition characterized by periodic blockage of the airway while sleeping, fitful sleep, and daytime sleepiness. It sometimes results in causing a hoarse voice too.

·         Women suffering from hypothyroidism tend to have irregularities in their menstrual cycles that range from infrequent periods to very frequent or heavy periods. The menstrual irregularities create difficulties in becoming pregnant and in pregnant women’s cases there exists an increased risk for miscarriage during early pregnancy.

·         Hypothyroidism also affects the cardiovascular system by which the heart rate slows down and the heart's contractions too get weak. This decreases the overall function of the vital organs. In addition, it can cause mild hypertension and increase in the blood levels of cholesterol. Related symptoms may include shortness of breath with exercise.

·         If a person has severe hypothyroidism, any trauma, infection, exposure to the cold, and certain medications can trigger a life-threatening condition called myxedema coma. This also causes a loss of consciousness and low body temperature.

The most important treatment for this problem is exercise which is strenuous enough to raise the heartbeat. It could be walking, swimming, running or cycling.

In order to cure hypothyroidism, it is always advised to consume foods that are high in goitrogens especially raw, foods high in iodine, to supplement the diet with multi minerals and multi vitamins, B complex, vitamin C, manganese, tyrosine and kelp. If you have sensitivity to chemicals some natural herbs may also help.
