Omega 3 is one of the important fatty acids in our diet. To know the benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids, let us first focus on what Omega 3 fatty acid is.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 fatty acid is a poly-unsaturated fatty acid which may help to lower triglycerides and increase HDL cholesterol. It also acts as an anticoagulant and prevents clotting of blood. There are many benefits of Omega 3 fatty acid. It helps to cure the following disorders:

High cholesterol

Omega-3 fatty acids of fatty fish have increased HDL cholesterol. Studies show that fish oil supplements reduce triglyceride levels. This controls cholesterol level.

High blood pressure

Clinical studies suggest that diets and fish oil supplements which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids help to lower blood pressure in patients of hypertension. Taking 3 or more grams of fish oil daily is beneficial in lowering high blood pressure.

Heart disease

It is known that the best way to prevent heart disease is to eat a diet which is low in saturated fat. Clinical studies say that EPA and DHA which are two omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil always help to reduce risk factors for heart disease.

Omega 3 fatty acid also helps to prevent as well as treat atherosclerosis by slowing the development of plaque and blood clots. Omega-3 fatty acids in the diet help preventing stroke caused by plaque and blood clots. They reduce the risk of stroke to 50%.  But high doses of fish oil or omega-3 fatty acids will increase the danger of bleeding.

Diabetes

Diabetes patients always have high triglyceride and low level of HDL levels. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can help to lower triglycerides and apoproteins which are markers of diabetes.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Studies have found that Omega 3 fatty acids help to reduce the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, joint pain and morning stiffness. It is also found that people with rheumatoid arthritis who take fish oil may be able to lower their dose of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

EPA and Omega 3 fatty acids help to reduce symptoms of lupus, joint pain and systemic lupus erythematosus.

Osteoporosis

Omega-3 fatty acids help to increase the calcium level in the body and improve bone strength to avoid osteoporosis

Studies have found that taking omega-3 fatty acids can help to reduce depression symptoms.

Bipolar disorder

Those who take fish oil are found to have reduced symptoms of bipolar disorder and they have fewer mood swings.
