Smoking is an injurious activity which has psychological and physiological connotations with the bearers taste and addiction, the leftovers being multiple queries regarding the reasons behind the smoking habits of people knowing the hazardous effects of smoking. People smoke tobacco because it’s addictive: Nicotine is an addictive substance found in tobacco between 3to 7%. Nicotine is induced to the bloodstream with the help of Tar which supply it to the lungs, from where it gets transferred to blood with the exchange function of alveoli of lungs. Nicotine is a stimulant which triggers the production of sugar in body, leading to a pleasurable satisfaction. Once nicotine has reached a certain level in blood, body requires it for normal functioning of nervous and supply system of body.

Psychological expression of smoking: Most of the smokers want to express themselves freely as they used to do during their childhood. Growth brings along with it repercussions of restraint and suppression of innocent desires and freedom to follow one’s whims and fancies. Smoking acts as a self expressive symbol which reflects the Smoker’s style and attitude: usually a free personality.

Social Smoking: Most of the people begin smoking because of peer pressure or for socializing purpose. People smoke when their friends smoke tobacco, they may smoke to initiate a conversation with people.

Physiological dependence on tobacco: Nicotine found in tobacco is an addictive substance which once induced into body reaches bloodstream and brain, causing an addiction in the nervous system for the requirement of nicotine to feel a stress free “high”. To balance the nicotine requirement of body, more nicotine is demanded to maintain the level of nicotine in bloodstream.

Image Setter: Cigarette smoking is still considered a style statement among most of the school and college students. Students love to flaunt whatever they think is wild and attention seeking. Smoking, an act regarded by people as adult’s exercise, when inculcated by children attracts the attention of fellow students and anti- smoking organizations and drugs available in the market.

Tobacco fights one’s aloofness: There is no verge of loneliness; man may feel lonely in a crowd of people. Cigarette stimulates an isolation free life, providing permanent companionship to the person.

Cigarettes can be rewards for the accomplishment of daily chores: Humans are accustomed to motivation and a will of improvisation by others which is not possible in everyday life as everybody is busy with his/her issues in life. Therefore a cigarette can be a reward to one’s good work.

Depression: People suffering from severe mental stress usually take up smoking as a reliever and inducer of sleep. Often women are accustomed to this sort of exercise as they are restricted to home and indoor activity.

Tobacco intake can be for multiple reasons depending on the excuses and false hopes formed by smokers to substitute their lack of self control on senses and emotions, by getting addicted to smoke and wasting a part of their healthy living on diseases and its cure. Reduction in tobacco consumption can only be reduced when this problem is dealt on a psychological and physiological level.
