Smoking is a global phenomenon which each government is striving hard to combat. The statistics of smoking since its popularity are stupefying. It’s because, the more people quit smoking the more people develop the habit of nicotine. If one set of people quit it another set leaves it. However, due to the universal anti smoking propagandas people all over have become health conscious.

In recent years the percentage of people inhaling nicotine has reduced in developed countries and a sudden surge in people taking nicotine has been estimated in developing countries.

The global statistics:

• One third of the global male adult population is consuming nicotine. About one is ten deaths are caused due to the intake of cigarette. If this trend continues by 2030 one in six will die out of tobacco.
• In the past 90 years one billion smokers have joined the community of world smokers. Out of which 47% are men and 12% are women.
• About 15 billion cigarettes are sold daily.

In Europe:

• In 70’s the highest consumption of tobacco was in Switzerland and Great Britain.
• In 90’s Poland, Greece and Hungary had the highest intake of tobacco.
• According to a survey a person consumes 18 cigarettes each day in Europe.

In America:

• 29.9% men and 18.1% women suffer from the risk of heart disease due to the intake of tobacco.
• However, the percentage of smoke lovers has visibly reduced due to the increase in media and other forms of campaigns and propagandas.
• One in every five out of an American die because of smoking.

In developing countries:

• 48% of men and 7% of women have been estimated to take nicotine in developing countries.
• China, which is the largest producer of tobacco has 615 of male smokers.
• In ex- Soviet Union countries 28%women have turned into smokers.
• 10 cigarettes daily are puffed by an African; whereas, in Latin American 18 cigarettes are smoked per person each day.
• The level of smokers in poor countries increases every day. Nicotine is one cause for crumbling the health status of people in developing countries.
• It accompanies other forms of social abuse with it.

In Australia:

• 18,000 die a premature death because of the intake of nicotine. Out of 1000 Australians one is murdered, 15 are killed on road whereas 250 die because of tobacco.
• According to Australian council on smoking report in the year 1986: 521 lungs, 148 gullets, 68 wombs, 85 bladders, 115 kidneys, 221 voice boxes and 71 tongues were removed due to the cancer caused by excessive intake of tobacco.
• The percentage of smokers of either sex has reduced from 40% to 30% in between 1980-1989.

The increase in the number of smokers is a threat to W.H.O which has involved most popular personalities from Hollywood and sports to propagate the hazards of smoking.
