The ill effects of smoking marijuana were reasoned long back in the year 1937 by the head of Federal Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, Harry J. Anslinger, who used yellow journalism to spread the health hazards of marijuana consumption in the body. Marijuana is an illegal drug in US, which is derived from the shreds of dried leaves, seeds and flowers of the plant Cannabis Sativa, which contain an active addictive chemical known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol; THC in short. This drug trigger the cannabinoid receptors found in: pleasure, memory, thoughts, concentration and perception sites of brain giving a high within 5-10 minutes. Marijuana is a highly addictive substance which has 60-70% more number of carcinogens found in it, which is harmful to the healthy functioning of lungs and heart. The harmful effects of marijuana are listed below:
Marijuana’s ill effects on lungs: The National Institute on Drug Abuse found that smoking marijuana causes greater risk of cancer than smoking tobacco causes. The carcinogens found in tretrahydrocannabinol get deposited on the surface of alveoli and cilia blocking the pure supply of air in the body. If the deposition on the surface of lungs gets converted into a thick film, it causes severe chest problems and can trigger the proliferation of cancerous cells in the body. Short term effects on lungs constitute:
- Formation of phlegm and mucus
- Regular coughing and wheezing
- Risk of lung allergies and infections
- Increased chances of asthma attack in old age.
Marijuana’s evil effects on brain: It is an addictive which within few minutes of its induction triggers the receptors present in brain associated with reactions caused due to drug intake. It affects the nervous system causing an obstruction in the signaling process of nerves. The National Institute on Health confirms the ill effects of marijuana on the areas of brain associated with:
- Sense and perception
- Memory and concentration
- Coordination and balancing of senses
- Anxiety and depression and,
- Hallucinations, delusions and disorientation.
Ill effects on heart: Pot or marijuana when induced in bloodstream blocks the easy passage of blood supply leading to numerous problems related to heart.
- Increase in the rate of supply of blood due to the excess pressure applied by heart, causes mild pain and increase in blood pressure. This is known as Tachycardia.
- It affects the problems related to circulatory system and Arteriosclerosis. This is thickening and narrowing of the width of arteries due to the induction of carcinogens in the body.
Marijuana’s effects on pregnant women: Pregnant women may give birth to children with memory and sense impairment. This can even lead to schizophrenia in young age.
Numerous methods are available in the market varying from medical advice to homeopath and allopath oral tablets and sprays which gradually reduces marijuana cravings and ill effects on body.
