Second hand smoking also known as passive smoking is an unavoidable form of inhalation of smoke combining mainstream smoking which is inhaled as a by product of gases exhaled by the smoker and side stream smoking which is the result of the burning of  the tip of the cigarette bud. Also known by the name of Environmental Tobacco Smoke, second hand smoke contains 4000 poisonous chemicals mingling with other harmful gases that pervade in air to enter the body of passive smokers. The ill effects of second hand smoke are multiple, but vary in its dimensions on the basis of different age group it is administered on:

In infants and unborn babies: In this case, the effect is fatal to life and health to its maximum level.

  • Passive tobacco inhalation may obstruct the supply of oxygen to the fetus.
  • Nicotine particles are carried to the blood with the sticky substance found in tobacco. The hemoglobin molecule found in red blood cells binds with oxygen molecule for normal delivery of oxygen to all the body parts. Carbon mono oxide which reacts faster than oxygen with hemoglobin molecule decreases the supply of oxygen.
  • Nicotine when introduced to the bloodstream of expecting mother, results in narrowing of blood vessels which clogs blood supply. This results in the birth of still babies and malnutrition the case of infants.

In children: The vulnerability of children increases with the exposure to second hand smoke.

  • Children subjected to the influence of involuntary smoking are subjected to the risk of asthma (between the ages of 6 to 13).
  • Passive smoking develops the taste and cravings for nicotine which might, in future, result in their direct intake of tobacco in the form of smoking.
  • Smoking at home can create a tensed atmosphere which can hamper their physical and mental development.

What the survey says?

Key answers:

  • Compared to 20% children under 6 in 1988, currently 11% kids are exposed to Environment Tobacco Smoke. (The National Survey on Environment of Asthma and Children’s Exposure to ETS)
  • Parents who are chain smokers are responsible for 90% of children’s exposure to breathing and heart diseases.

Effect of passive smoking on your family: Second hand smoking is responsible for estranging you from your family and friends

  • Loss of energy and tiredness may not permit you to play with your children.
  • Your trekking exercises are reduced because smoking decreases your stamina.
  • Smoking, over the years, changes your temperament: anger, irritation and frustration are the by products of smoking which will severely affect your personal and social life.

Harmful effects of second hand smoking can only be controlled if more and more smokers are encouraged to quit smoke forever. Out of the numerous methods available, homeopathy is one of the safest and cheapest one, that can gradually reduce smoking cravings.
