Most smokers accept the damage that smoking causes, but cannot quit because it’s very difficult for them to do so. Some of the benefits of quitting smoking cigarettes include saving money, not smelling of smoke, hunting for a smoking area, and a revival of your taste buds. There are many harmful effects of smoking and quitting it ensures that conditions such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and cancer are also not contributed to. Some say that the best way to stop smoking is to adopt the cold turkey method.
However, smoking is a very strong addiction and any extra assistance goes a long way. Here are some points which may help you along your path of quitting smoking.
How to Quit Smoking Cigarettes
- Make a List: Usually among all the ways to quit smoking, the first step is to get inspired. You can do this by listing your reasons for quitting and penning them down on paper. After this, you should paste this list in a prominent place where you can see it daily or carry it around with you. Visualizing and remembering the reasons to stop smoking would help you resist temptation. There are innumerable benefits of quitting smoking, but list only those that have meaning to you.
- Face the Facts: You need to make another list, however this time the reasons should be why quitting would be difficult. At this time, you could feel that there is no point in doing all this, but the objective has to be prepared. Always try to list ways to replace the need. For e.g., if you smoke to relieve stress, then you can find a new way to do it, like taking a 5 minute walk.
- Keep Track: Keeping a record of your progress is the other best way to stop smoking. Write down the date, when you plan to stop smoking completely on the first page. On the following pages, record your daily progress as well as other details, such as when was there a desire to smoke. All this will help you in tracking your progress and you won’t be able to make a fool of yourself, about how much you are smoking.
- Other Remedies: Discard anything that would remind you of smoking, once you quit smoking completely. Throw any leftover cigarettes, lighters, ashtrays etc. Make a phone call or play any games on your computer at those times when you would have taken a cigarette break at work. You could also have oat extract 4 times a day, as a study has shown that this helps smokers lessen the number of cigarettes they smoke.
There is no one best way to stop smoking. You have to be very sure that you want to quit and also take help from your friends, family members and colleagues so that they can support you as much as possible. Most people tumble while trying to quit, so your success depends on how you accept these setbacks and move ahead in your life.
