Winters are not only time for warm clothes and hot soups; they are also a time for a number of skin problems that arise due to low temperature and low humidity. If you leave your skin defenseless against the dry, cold winter air and do not take proper care of it, it will become excessively dry and scratchy. You might feel good while scratching it, but doing so will damage it all the more.
Fighting winter's skin itch needs you to be prepared to fight against the cold, dry wind and below normal temperatures. To keep your skin guarded all the time, you will have to take extra care of it.
Tips to fight Skin itching in winters:
- The best way to have a soft and itch-free skin is to consume lots of water. Water is one remedy that will cater to needs of all skin types, making the skin silk-smooth.
- Avoid bathing or taking shower in excessively hot water, instead used lukewarm water for your bath.
- Do not remain under the shower for more than 15 minutes. Staying in water for a long time will take away the natural oils of the skin and will make it dry.
- Apply moisturizer that suits your skin type immediately after you are done bathing. This will trap the moisture in your skin and will keep it supple.
- If you have a very dry skin, use a heavy moisturizer that is cream or oil based. This will prevent the moisture from getting evaporated from the skin.
- Applying moisturizer once a day will not suffice for most skin types, except for very oily skin. Apply the moisturizer twice a day if you find that your skin gets dry after some time.
- Never step outside into the cold winds without a coat of moisturizer on your skin.
- Avoid using cosmetic products that contain alcohol or spirit.
- Soaking yourself in herbal bath containing skin coating oils for about 15-20 minutes will help restore moisture to your skin.
- Another point to keep in mind is that you should dress in layers to prevent skin from becoming too cold or overheated. Sweaty skin, combined with extreme and harsh temperatures can cause further irritation and itching.
- Remember to use facial moisturizer specially made to suit the skin of the face. Keep yourself armed with body and face moisturizers separately.
- It is a common misconception that sunscreen is necessary only in summers. It is just as important in winter to apply sunscreen before stepping out in the Sun. Snow and ice have the property of reflecting sunrays, which will affect your skin even more. Use a sunscreen that has an SPF factor of at least 15 and apply it about 30 minutes before going outside.
- Turning on the heating in your room will make the air drier and will aggravate the itching. To replenish moisture in the air, make use of humidifiers. It will not only help hydrate your skin, but it will also rejuvenate you while you sleep.
These tips will work well only if you follow them religiously and regularly. You should remember that caring for your skin during winters is an ongoing process which can not be said to have been over after a while. So, follow these tips and you can surely win the fight against the winter itch.
