Our skin needs to be cleaned regularly to keep it free from dirt, grime and dead cells that accumulate with time. Exfoliation is an extremely important step in complete skin care regimen. The facial exfoliators work by removing dead cells from the stratum corneum, which is the outermost layer of the skin. The removal of dead skin cells from this layer reveals fresher looking and a smoother facial skin.
Not only this, the process of exfoliation reduces excessive oil on the surface of skin that leads to acne and blackheads in people with oily skin. It also helps anti-aging cosmetic products penetrate better into facial skin and makes them work better.
However, it is important to know that all facial exfoliators are not same. Like other cosmetic products, different facial exfoliators are meant for different skin types.
Facial Exfoliator depending on your skin type:
Here are certain tips to help you choose the most suited facial exfoliator for your skin type and how to use it so as to maximize its results:
- Oily Skin – Those who have an oily skin should choose alpha hydroxy acid or lactic acid based exfoliators. These are also called chemical exfoliators or peels, due to their chemical ingredients. Alpha hydroxy acids and lactic acids lift off a layer of dead cells and expedite growth of new cells. Although, effective as they are, they can be quite irritating as well, given to their chemical content.
- Normal Skin – If you have a normal skin, then you must choose a physical or a manual exfoliator. For a skin that is neither dry nor oily, a gentle physical exfoliator is perfect. Being aware of what product you are looking for will help you all the more. For manual exfoliator, go for a product that has words like scrub or microdermabrasion on its label. This is so because these products use natural or artificial grains like almond meal, sugar, jojoba beads, etc. that gently remove dead surface cells while not causing any harm to the skin.
- Sensitive skin – For sensitive skin, facial exfoliators that contain enzymes are the best. Enzyme based facial exfoliators are made with natural fruit enzymes; hence they are also known as enzyme peels. These exfoliators work by dissolving dead skin cells without causing any sort of reaction or irritation to the skin. The most common fruit enzymes used for these products are papaya and pineapple enzymes, since they brighten and clarify the skin. These exfoliators also contain antioxidants and hydrating ingredients like aloevera and green tea that soothes and protects the sensitive skin.
- Acne–prone Skin – Go for beta-hydroxy based facial exfoliators if you have an acne prone skin. Beta-hydroxy peels are very effective for such skin as they are easily soluble in oil and also help in treating acne lesions. When buying a beta hydroxy exfoliator, you must check for a product containing salicylic acid.
Remember not to exfoliate everyday because over-exfoliation can be very harmful and can cause skin irritation leadings to permanent skin damage. Do check the reaction of the facial exfoliator for a week to see if there is a reaction and then if it suits you, use it only twice or thrice a week. Also, always use sun protection after using a facial exfoliator and before stepping out in the sun. Keeping these tips in mind, you can rejuvenate and refresh your skin and have a clear and brighter complexion.
