Toenails and fingernails protect your finger tissue. Common causes of fingernails or toenails are trauma, infection, aging and skin diseases. People think that diet is important to keep away nail disorders, but it’s not true because it is not responsible for abnormal nail changes. Nails are open to anything around, so they can catch infection easily. Some nail disorders are common and can be cured with a little attention, so you need not panic.

Here are some common nail disorders that are ordinary, but the infection will spread if you don’t give them proper attention.

Common Nail Disorders

  1. Bruised Nails: This is a condition when a clot of blood is formed below the nail plate and this causes damage to the nail bed. This makes the nail color maroon to black. These nails fall off especially during the healing process. Hard brushing of the bruised nails is not advised.
  2. Onychocryptosis: This is an ordinary condition, in which the nails grow in to the sides around the nails. If the nails are not deeply stuck in the flesh, you can trim and curve the corners. But if they are imbedded badly, then you should go to the doctor to relieve the pressure.
  3. Onchatrophia: It is the wasting away of nails. This means nails lose its shine, shrinks and falls. You should handle it with care.
  4. Onychauxis: This condition is opposite to onychatrophia. The nails are unusually thick. The reasons are local infection, heredity or internal imbalance.
  5. Onychophagy: It is a condition when nails are bitten to become deformed. This can be avoided if you do regular manicures or artificial nails. Artificial nails can break the biting habit. There are also remedies for that in the market.
  6. Pterygium: It is the ordinary condition of the forward growth of the cuticle on the nail. If this cuticle stuck to nail plate is not treated on time, then it will grow over the nail to the free edge. If it goes to the severe stage, then it will take a bunch of manicures to get better.
  7. Onychorrhexis: This refers to spilt nails. It can be caused due to chemicals that you use, if the finger is injured, nail polish removers and careless filing. This can be treated by softening the nails with reconditioning treatment.
  8. Leukonychia: White spots on nails are visible in this condition. It is caused by air bubbles or other injuries. It cannot be treated, but it will grow out.
  9. Hangnails: It is the common condition in which the cuticle around the nail rips. Reason is dry skin and improper trimming. If your cuticle skin is dry, then you should keep it moisturized with oil.
  10. Eggshell Nails: If it is thin, white and curved over the edges, then you have eggshell nails. The condition is caused by improper diet, medication, etc. Be careful when getting a manicure done, if you have eggshell nails.
  11. Discolored Nails: In this condition, nails may have a variety of colors like blue, blue-gray, gray, yellow, green, red or purple. Discoloring can be caused by topical or oral medication, heart condition, and poor circulation. You can hide this condition with artificial wrap, tips or colored polish.

It is important to take care of nails because if you ignore nail disorders as a minor wound, then the infection will grow and spread more. If your nail injury is become severe, see the doctor. But prevention is anytime better than cure. It will not take much time to clean your nails daily. Appropriate manicures, trimming and moisturizing will prevent your nails from any type of disorders and diseases.
