Assessing Your Skin Type

To take proper care of your skin, it is very important that you know what your skin type is. Skin type is generally based on the behavior of the skin and is not a medical jargon. The most common classification groups that are used by cosmetic product companies are normal, oily, dry and combination skin types. Blemish-prone, sensitive and sun-damaged is another type of classification used for skin types.

If you use skin care products without proper analysis as to what product will suit your skin type, you might cause damage to your skin, which in some cases is irreversible. For instance, using too much emollient in moisturizers and creams on an oily skin will make it oilier and will aggravate pimples. Likewise, using drying cleansers on a dry and sensitive skin will dry it further and will make it rough. Hence, you must assess and analyze your skin type before you start using any products on it.

Asses your Skin type

Skin analysis requires some pre conditioning. Remember never try to analyze your skin right after washing with water or cleansers as your skin reacts to them. The skin takes about four to five hours to recover from the effects of cleansing and then becomes normal. Women especially should do it on a day when they are not wearing any makeup or creams so as to asses their skin accurately.

Take a piece of facial tissue and press it on different random parts of your face. Check the tissue to find any blotches on it. You will see them more clearly if you hold it against the light. If there are any blotches on the tissue, then it implies that you have an oily skin. This is why this assessment should be done on a no-makeup and no-cream day as they can leave some amount of oil on your face and it will result in wrong assessment.

Conversely, if the normal area of your face appears to be dry, tightened and has any flakes or patches, then you have a dry skin. Finally, if you see that some areas are dry and some are oily, then it means that you have a combination skin.

Types of Skin:

To help you get an even better idea to assess your skin type, given below are the most common characteristics of different skin types:

Normal Skin: This skin type is clear, supple and soft. It is neither too dry nor too oily and isn't overly sensitive to the sun, climate or the environment.

Dry Skin: This type of skin looks dull, feels tight after washing even with water and needs constant moisturizing to avoid flaking and dryness.Oily skin: This skin type feels soft and supple, looks shiny and needs to be cleansed several times in a day.

Combination Skin: In this type, the T-zone is oily and the skin of the cheeks and the jaw line are dry. This skin needs special care as it needs to fight against oil and dryness both!

This way you can judge what type of skin you have. By doing so, you will be able to cater to the specific needs of your skin and will be able to take care of it properly. Not knowing your skin type can make you suffer from skin problems even more.
