A glucometer, also known as a blood sugar monitor is medical equipment that is used to know the glucose or sugar level in the blood. People with hypoglycemia or diabetes mellitus use this device as a key element of home blood glucose monitoring. By pricking the finger tip with a lancet, a small drop of blood is obtained and is placed on a disposable test strip which is read by the meter and is used to calculate the blood glucose level. The blood sugar level is shown in mg/dl or mmol/l by the Accu check glucometer
Guided by home blood glucose monitoring, the most important objective of the administration of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus for as much of the time as possible has been achieving closer to normal levels of sugar or glucose in the blood. Decline in the incidence rate and harshness of long term complications from hyperglycemia as well as a decline in the short term, possibly life threatening complications of hypoglycemia are the benefits included.
There are many important characteristics of Accu check glucometer which could differ from model to model and must be used for comparison between these meters.
Size
Accu check glucometers come in the size of the palm of the hand, though some are larger or even smaller and are powered by battery.
Test Strips
For measuring the blood glucose levels, a consumable constituent comprising chemical which reacts with glucose or sugar in the drop of the blood is used. For some glucometers, this element is a plastic test strip with a small spot impregnated with glucose oxidase and other components. Each strip is discarded after it is used once. Some models use discs instead of strips that could be used for many readings.
Coding
The user needs to manually enter in a code found on the vial of test strips or on a chip which comes with the test strip as required by some models, since test strips could differ from batch to batch. The meter would be calibrated to that batch of test strips by entering the chip or coding into the glucose meter. The meter reading could be inaccurate if this process is carried out incorrectly.
Volume of Blood sample
Different models need different size of blood drops, i.e. from 0.3 to 1 ul. The frequency of unproductive pricks is lessened by smaller volume requirements.
Display
A small window in an Accu check glucometer displays the glucose value in mg/dl or mmol/l. Different countries use different preferred measurements. Countries like US, France, Japan and Israel prefer measuring glucose levels in mg/dl. Several models of this glucometer can toggle between both types of measurements.
Data Transfers
Several meters nowadays posses more sophisticated data handling capabilities. You can download several data by an infrared or a cable on to a computer which has software for diabetes management to display the test results. Additional data such as insulin dose amounts of carbohydrates consumed or exercise can also be entered in to the computer with the help of some of these glucometers.
Thus, Accu check glucometers are useful in checking the accurate blood glucose reading with utmost consistency.
