Sexually transmitted diseases are caused by having unsafe sex with the infected partner. STDs are directly transmitted directly from the infected partner through sexual contact like intercourse, oral sex, sharing of sexual devices. Some SD’s are infections that are transmitted by persistent and close skin to skin contact. There are several types of STD’s and some diseases affect both the sexes, while some affect only men or women.
STD’s in men are divided in 3 major categories:
- STD’s associated with genial lesions
- STD’s associated with urethra
- Systemic STD’s
Causes and pathogens involved
Most of the common STD’s in men are caused due to pathogens:
- Bacteria: bacterial vaginosis, chancroid, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis
- Fungal: Tinea cruris, Yeast infection
- Viral: Herpes, Viral hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, Genital warts, Adenoviruses, Kaposi’s sarcoma
- Parasites: Crab louse, Scabies
- Protozoal: Trichomoniasis
Symptoms of STDs in men
It is very important for men to regularly test for any STD. there are certain signs and symptoms for STD’s. There are many different types of STD’s and their symptoms vary. Some of the common symptoms of the STD’s:
- Discharge from the penis
- Painful sex
- Blisters in private parts
- Painful urination
- Abdominal pain
- Sore throats in case of oral sex
- Pain in anus in case of anal sex
- Anal pap’s including redness or soreness of the area
- Rash on palms or feet
- Discolored urine
- Light colored stools
- Yellowish eyes and skin
- Blisters in the genital area
- Flu like symptoms with fungal infections are seen in case if HIV.
- Unusual tiredness
- Decreased immune system
- Infertility problems
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
Treatment of STDs in men
- If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of STD, you should immediately seek medical treatment and ensure your good health
- There is treatment available for most of the STD’s but some are incurable such as HIV, hepatitis B and C and HHV-8.
- The most effective way to prevent the infection is abstinence
- Use of latex barriers like condoms during vaginal or anal intercourse and oral genital contact decreases the spread
- Appropriate counseling of at risk individuals and early diagnosis of the disease is also a part of treatment
- Antibiotics are used to treat most of the STD”s
- Public information campaigns and development of treatments to manage suppressing the replication of the organisms involved
- Contact tracing in case of incurable diseases as it helps to contain infection
Prevention of STDs in men
- The best way to stay away from any sexually transmitted diseases is to stay away from sex. There should be monogamy in marriage, settle down and live faithfully
- Using condoms lowers the risk of infection but cannot avoid any infection as it may tear or may not be useful during oral sex
- Sex education to young people also helps in preventing spread of sexually transmitted diseases
- Prevent use or sharing infected needles by drug users
- SARS can spread through casual contact like coughing and sneezing
- Tests and measures to prevent infection to the newborn from infected mother
- Prevent use of infected blood or organs
Unsafe sex causes sexually transmitted diseases (STD) like HIV, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, Herpes etc. treatment of STDs in men is available but some are incurable. Prevention of STDs in men is the best option.
