Sexual problems in men refer to any problem during any phase of the sexual response cycle that prevents the individual or couple from having a satisfying sex life. It may be affecting any of the four phases of sexual response: excitement, plateau, orgasm and resolution

Both men and women of all ages are affected by sexual problems. It is more common among men having decline in health associated with aging.

Other name: sexual dysfunction, last longer

Causes of sexual dysfunction

Sexual problems in men may be due to physical or psychological problems.

Physical causes:

  1. Diabetes
  2. Heart diseases
  3. Neurological disorders
  4. Kidney or liver failure
  5. Drug abuse
  6. Alcohol abuse
  7. Side effects of medicines
  8. Injury to the penis
  9. Chronic illness

Psychological causes:

  1. Stress and anxiety
  2. Concerns about performance and nervousness
  3. Guilt
  4. Marital or problems in relationship
  5. Depression
  6. Lack of attraction for partner
  7. Strict religious background
  8. Effects of past sexual trauma

Sexual problems in men

The most common sexual problems in men are related to ejaculation disorders, erectile dysfunction and inhibited sexual desire

Ejaculation disorders: this refers to the ejaculation that occurs soon after penetration, is slow or is forced back into the bladder.

  1. Premature ejaculation
  2. Inhibited or retarted ejaculation
  3. Retrograde ejaculation

Erectile dysfunction: also called as impotence is the inability to attain or maintain an erection suitable to have sexual intercourse.

Inhibited sexual desire: this refers to loss of libido or decrease in desire for sex. Reduced libido may be a result of many factors and is mostly associate with low levels of hormone

Diagnosis of sexual problems in men

Your doctor will take your medical history of symptoms and order some tests to rule out other medical problems. Other doctors like urologist, sex therapist and an endocrinologist may be referred.

Tests:

  1.  blood tests to evaluate hormonal levels
  2. Vascular assessment to evaluate blood flow towards penis
  3. Sensory testing to measure the strength of nerve impulses
  4. Nocturnal penile tumescence and rigidity test to monitor erections occurring in sleep

Treatment of sexual problem in men

Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Most of the sexual problems are treatable with counseling, education and medication.

  1. Medical treatment--if the cause is due to any physical problem. Medications like Viagra, levitra or cialis may help improve sexual function in men as they increase the flow of blood to the penis
  2. Hormones—for men with low levels of testosterone
  3. Psychological therapy—therapy with trained counselors may help the person address feelings of fear, anxiety or guilt
  4. Mechanical aids—vacuum devices and penile implants to help erectile dysfunction
  5. Sex education ad communication—sex education, sexual behavior and response may help a person to overcome fear and anxiety. Open communication between partners helps overcome many barriers and lead to a healthy sex life

Prevention of sexual problems in men

You can prevent only some of the problems. For other problems, the cause may help you better understand and cope with the problem. You should do the following to maintain a good sexual life: 

  1. Follow and observe your treatment plan for any health conditions
  2. Limit your intake of alcohol
  3. Stay away from drugs
  4. Quit smoking
  5. Deal with emotional issues like stress, depression, and anxiety
  6. Have open communication with your partner
