Masturbation refers to the sexual stimulation of one’s own genital areas to the point of orgasm. This stimulation may be manual or by other types of body contact, using objects or tools or a combination. This is a common form of autoeroticism and the words are used to convey the same meaning. Mutual masturbation is also seen among partners. It is also very commonly seen in case of animals both in wild and in captivity.
The methods of masturbation are common to both the sexes and include pressing and rubbing the genital area with fingers or with any other object. Electric vibrators are used and may be inserted in the vagina or anus. People indulging in masturbation may enjoy acts like touching, rubbing or stimulating the nipples or other erogenous zones while masturbating. Lubrication is sometimes applied to intensify sensation. Watching or reading pornography or sexual fantasy is often common adjuncts to masturbation. Masturbation activities are often ritualized and may be fetishes and paraphilias. Some times masturbation becomes fatal when activities include autoerotic asphyxiation and self bondage. If a sharp object is inserted in the urethra to get sexual pleasure, it may cause a serious injury and infection.
Masturbation makes one feel well and it is a way or relieving the sexual tension that builds over time. This is more common in people who do not have partners or are not available for sex. It is also a safe sexual alternative that avoids pregnancy and other dangers like sexually transmitted diseases.
It is useful when a man must give a semen sample for infertility testing or during sperm donation.
It is prescribed by sex therapists in men when they suffer from sexual dysfunction so that the person experiences an orgasm or to delay its arrival
Masturbation was considered as pervasive and abnormal in earlier days. It is a taboo in many religions. But now days it is considered healthy sexual activity, acceptable and safe. It does not cause any injury when done in moderation.
It is suggested to improve sex life as it involves exploring your body and determines the erotic points of your body.
Masturbation is a problem when it affects the daily life and activities. It is harmful when it interferes with a person’s normal sex life with partner or when it is done in public. It may cause distress when it becomes compulsive behavior. It also leads to guilt or shame as it is considered as sin in many cultures and religions.
Masturbation may lead to addiction and it may take more advanced forms like sexual addiction, multiple affairs, sex with prostitutes or other illegal activities.
