Male Infertility

Male infertility refers to the biological inability of a person to contribute to conception. When the couple tries to conceive for a year and does not succeed then the problem may be termed as infertility problem. Male infertility can be caused by a number of factors and characteristics of sperms. Tests can be performed to evaluate the sperms and their penetrative ability in the ovum.
Causes of male infertility:-
There are many factors that contribute to Male infertility.
Pretesticular causes are:-
1. Drugs, smoking and alcohol
2. Strenuous riding ( bicycle or horse)
3. Hypogonadism
Testicular factors are as follows:-
1. Semen quality and quantity
2. Genetic factors
3. Varicocele
4. Malaria
5. Mumps
6. Hydrocele
Posttesticular causes:-
1. Obstruction in vas deferens
2. Infection (prostrate)
3. Impotence
4. Penetration defect
Other causes include:-
- Environment pollution
- Exposure to high heat for long
- Old age
- Premature ejaculation
- Previous chemotherapy
- Radiation exposure
- Surgery or trauma
Low sperm count:- This is one of the major causes of male infertility. Low sperm count may be due to major physical or mental stress. If the condition is temporary, you can change your life style. Get medical help in case there is no improvement.
Male infertility symptoms:- Most infertile men do not have any male infertility symptoms. Some times a man with hormonal problem may notice a change in his voice or pattern in hair growth. There may be development of breasts or difficulty in sexual life
Male infertility tests:- Male infertility tests begin with the physical examination by the urologist with specialization in the male infertility. Your doctor may order some blood tests to look for hormonal imbalance or any disease. Along with blood sample, semen samples may also be required.
- Semen analysis (sperm count): test to measure the amount and quality of a man’s semen and sperms
- Testicular biopsy: surgery to remove a piece of tissue from testicles for examination
Male infertility treatment:-
1. Education and counseling for the couples to reduce the emotional impact. Medication and surgery are the primary methods of treating male infertility.
2. Medical procedures like intrauterine insemination and invitro fertilization
3. Gat-Goren non surgical method for treating varicoceles
4. Medications like clomiphene citrate and antiestrogen drugs may be given for low sperm count and poor sperm motility
5. Vitamins like vit E may be prescribed to counter oxidative stress associated with sperm DNA damage and reduced sperm motility
Prevent Male infertility
1. Avoid drugs and medication known to cause male infertility
2. Avoid excessive exercise and physical activity
3. Prevent exposure to chemicals like pesticides
4. Use loose underclothes
5. Consume diet with a lot of folic acid
6. Get treatment for sexually transmitted diseases
7. Take care to stay away from diabetes and hypothyroidism
