Genital warts are flesh colored or gray growths found in the genital area and the anal region of both men and women. Common warts and genital warts are not the same as genital warts. Warts are the most commonly transmitted sexual disease and are caused by virus.
Causes of Genital Warts in Men
- The genital warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). They can occur at any age and are highly contagious.
- Genital warts are also seen in children and are transmitted by non sexual methods like direct contact
- Some times sexual abuse of children by infected person may also lead to infection in children
- Genital warts are directly associated with oral contraceptives due to increased sexual contact without the use of barrier protection, multiple sex partners and sex at early stage
- HPV
- There are over 100 strains of HPV and most of these have the potential to cause infection
- The most specific types of virus that cause infection are HPV-6 and HPV-11 and these have a low potential to cause cancer
- Other HPV viruses are also known to cause cervical cancers in women
Symptoms of genital warts
- There are no symptoms associated with genital warts. If symptoms do appear it is in the form of pinkish white lumps or large cauliflower shaped lumps on the genital area
- Warts appear on or around the penis, the scrotum, the thighs or anus
- In women the warts are seen around vulva, inside the vagina or cervix
- Warts may be single or in groups
- There may be some itching but, usually they are painless
- In some severe cases the warts spread from the genital areas to anus
- Warts are also often confused with other STD’s like genital herpes, syphilis or molluscum
- Many a time’s simple non infectious lumps are also confused for genital warts
Self care at home for genital warts
- Prevent any trauma to the area that may result in bleeding
- Be careful as to prevent any transmission to your partner
- Avoid touching warts as they are highly infectious
- Do not pick or squeeze any genital warts
Treatment for genital warts
There is no treatment for genital warts that completely cures them. There are often outbreaks once the person is infected. These genital warts become less frequent over time as the body naturally clears the virus. Antibiotics are not helpful in case of genital warts as the causal organism is virus and nit bacteria.
- Cryotherapy: freezing of warts using liquid nitrogen or cryoprobe is done. It is an excellent treatment as there are no side effects and response rate is very high
- Laser treatment: used for recurrent or extensive genital warts. Physically destroys lesions and may require local anesthesia
- Electrodessication: electric current is used to destroy warts
- Podophyllum resin: take medical help while applying(not recommended for pregnant women)
- Podofilox: for topical application at home
- Surgery is done in case the warts are severs
Prevention of genital warts
- Since no treatment is 100% effective, it is better to take preventive measures
- HPV vaccine is safe and effectively used in preventing warts
- Refrain from any sexual activity till therapy is complete
- Use of condoms during intercourse mat provide some protection
- Keep genital areas clean and dry
