 Circumcision is a procedure in which the loose tissues of the foreskin are removed. Circumcision may be performed for religious reasons or for health reasons. Circumcision is done in case of new borns to minimize the risk of cancer of penis and cancer of cervix in sexual partners.

Phimosis is the medical indication for circumcision if the foreskin cannot be retracted at a certain age.

Safety during Circumcision

 Is very safe when:

1.    Performed carefully using sterile technique

2.    Performed by trained doctor

3.    Performed on healthy and stable infant

Circumcision Procedure

Circumcision may be performed using surgical clamp techniques or with plastibell

Circumcision Care

1.    Area be cleaned with warm water several times in a day

2.    While changing diaper, apply small amounts of unscented petroleum jelly or an antibiotic ointment

3.    It may take 10 days for the incision scab to slough off

4.    When the scab falls off, no further care is necessary, except he normal hygiene

5.    Take medical help in case there is persistent bleeding and there are blisters

6.    Check if your child is urinating normally within 12 hours of Circumcision

Pain during Circumcision

Pain can be reduced by using analgesia. Analgesic methods include use of a topical cream, dorsal penile nerve block and the subcutaneous ring block

What to see before doing Circumcision

1.    Check for a unstable or a sick infant that does not feed well, eliminate waste and does not have normal body temperature

2.    Wait for the baby to meet the criteria for discharge from hospital before performing Circumcision

3.    Infants with abnormalities in genital areas should not be Circumcisised

4.    Infants with family history of bleeding disorders

5.    Premature babies

Risks of Circumcision

Circumcision does have some potential risks as any other surgical procedure. The hardest thing of the decision is accepting the fact that the procedure can be painful and worst if there is no anesthesia used.

1.    Local infections

2.    Excessive bleeding

3.    Complications due too local anesthesia

4.    Local skin damage and loss (necrosis)

5.    Inflammation of penis head

6.    Foreskin may be cut too long or too short to heal properly

7.    Remaining skin may get reattached to the penis end requiring minor surgery

Benefits of Circumcision

There are many plus sides of Circumcision.  When a comparison is made of Circumcisised to uncircumcised boys, it is seen that circumcised men have lower risks for penile cancer. Some studies indicate that the procedure offer additional line of defense against sexually transmitted diseases

1.    Irritation, inflammation and infection are the main penile problems in uncircumcised males and these can be overcome by Circumcision as it helps to maintain cleanliness in the area

2.    Circumcised penis is easier to clean and maintain body hygiene

3.    Decreased risk in urinary tract infections

4.    Prevent penile problems like retraction of foreskin of an un Circumcised penis

5.    Decreased risk of penile cancer
