Both men and women tend to put on surplus weight differently. Women are more likely to add weight to their hips, whereas men are more likely to put weight on in the mid section in the form of belly fat. Studies show that two thirds of men carry surplus weight in the form of a pot belly. Belly fat in men is a serious growing concern nowadays as most of the men in mid age tend to gain excess weight in this region which could further lead to health complications.

Carrying surplus weight is an unhealthy proposition for anybody. The factors for diseases like stroke, diabetes, heart disease and a host of others increase as the weight of the body increases. It’s a great concern that doctors regularly are suggesting their patients to lose weight. If left unchecked, weight could become the most important driver behind poor health and there is no clearer gauge of weight gain in men than belly fat.

Fat and your Body

No one would argue that the body needs a certain amount of fat. It’s when the fat is too much for our frame that problem begins to occur. Belly fat in men begins as the caloric intake of food exceeds the body’s capability to burn the calories off. These surplus calories are converted to fat and stored until the body needs the energy. The difficulty that the body runs into is that the time for the use of fats never comes.

It’s normal for the metabolism of human body to slow down as we age. As our metabolism slows, our body needs fewer calories to maintain the daily rigors of life. For most of us, this slow down in our metabolism is accompanied with a normal slow down in our life activities. We simply are not as active as when we were young. The combination of the slowdowns coupled with poor eating habits causes our bodies to make excess fat. In men, that fat goes to the belly.

Why is Belly Fat a Concern for Men?

Individuals who gain belly fat are at greater risk of severe health problems, even death, than those individuals who accumulate fat in other areas and men are more likely to gain weight around the abdomen region than women. Despite of your overall weight, having a large amount of belly fat increases your risk of:

·         Heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke

·         Some types of cancer

·         Type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance

·             High triglycerides, low levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) or high-quality cholesterol.

·             Metabolic syndrome and sleep apnea

Role of Age in Gaining Belly Fat

As you age, you lose muscle particularly if you’re not physically active. Muscle loss could slow the rate at which your body burns calories. In turn, if you don’t restrict your calories or increase your physical activity levels, you might gain weight.

Sit ups help in making your abdominal muscles stronger, but spot exercises alone won’t reduce belly fat in men. The best way to lessen your waist size is to lower your total body fat through healthy eating and routine physical activity.
