Sleep Apnea is a form of sleeping disorder which is characterized with stoppage and frequent cessation in air flows and breathing for more than 10 seconds. It releases the patient from deep level of sleep to shallow level of sleep. The repetition of blockages in breathing is followed by snores and air chokes. The problem of apnea causes fatigue and tiredness throughout the day. The disease is common amongst adults and rarely found among children.

  • The breathing airflow in the blood is about 70 to 100% depending upon person to person. Whereas, in the case of patients suffering from this disorder the breathing rate visibly reduces by 25%.
  • It is characterized by the drop in the concentration of oxygen in the blood which directly causes the decrease in the supply of oxygen through blood to vital body parts.
  • A hypopnea is a condition which is not as severe as sleep apnea as it decreases the airflow in the body by a minimum percentage. It is generally characterized by the drop of breathing air from 70% to 69 or 65 %.

There are two types of sleeping disorders of sleep apnea:

Obstructive sleep apnea: In this type of disorder, sleep is completely disrupted leading to pauses in breathing and airflow.

Central sleep apnea: When the brain receptors which deals with breathing are not sending right signals to the breathing activity then it can lead to this type of disorder.

Symptoms of sleep apnea are as follows:

  • Loud sounds of snoring and severe headache
  • Dryness in mouth and increase in the weight
  • Pain in chest and increase in the blood pressure
  • Temperamental and mood fluctuation along with persistent irritation in behavior
  • It reduces concentration in work and signs of depression are visible in the patient
  • Decreased libido and increase in the rate of urination
  • Sudden weight change and disorientation after awakening.

Preventive techniques and methods available:

C-PAP: This is a machine which blows air into the nose with the aid of a nose mask which keeps the airway unobstructed. This method is applied in the case of patients suffering from mild form of sleep apnea.

Bi-level machine: This kind of machine is used in the case of people suffering from severe sleep apnea. However, the procedure of air blow is different from C-PAP machine as it blows air in two different levels of pressure. The flow of air pressure is high during inhalation and is low during exhalation.

Herbal medicines: Naturally and herbal made medicines containing some percentage of Melatonin chemical can help in decreasing the rate of sleep apnea in a person.

If left untreated the disease can cause fatal heart and breathing troubles in the patient. A medically certified doctor’s advice is suggested in the first place.
