Hypothyroidism is a condition that occurs due to the under activity of the thyroid gland in producing required amount of hormones. Our thyroid gland is supposed to generate thyroid hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine also known as T4 and T3 respectively. These hormones maintain the metabolism as well as help the body in burning food to produce enough energy. There is one more hormone named THS or thyroid stimulating hormone that is required along with T3 and T4 to perform this function. THS is generated in the brain by the pituitary gland.
The existence of low level of hormones inside the body results in causing many problems such as tiredness, increased cholesterol level, weakness in the body etc. In some severe cases the patient has to suffer through heart attack as well. Hypothyroidism can be found in any person undergoing hormonal disturbances especially women at the stage of pregnancy, menstrual cycle and menopause. This condition is really harmful for new born babies and in some cases it can result into miscarriage also.
Most common causes of hypothyroidism are:
Hashimoto’s Disease: This disease is also called as lymphocytic thyroditis. It an autoimmune disorder which results when the immune system is disrupted and the antibodies that it produces to fight against the bacteria start acting against its own tissues and cells. By this improper action the thyroid hormones are not produced on regular basis causing hypothyroidism.
Another cause is autoimmune thyroiditis which is again an autoimmune disease that creates problems for the thyroid gland in generating enough hormones. In this condition also the antibodies instead of fighting against the outside parasites start destructing the inside cells by which the hormones are not produced as per the requirement.
Symptoms which show that a person is suffering from hypothyroidism are:
- Gaining weight
