Sleep apnea is a form of sleep disorder due to the disturbance in breathing affecting sound sleep for more than 15 to 20 times for 10 to 15 seconds during each phase of obstruction. It carries the patient from deep level of sleep to shallow level of sleep pattern causing irritation and fatigue throughout the working day. The causes of sleep apnea range from physical breathing disorders to neuromuscular changes in the body.
Causes for the development of sleep apnea:
Obesity and excess weight gain: Obesity is a stage of excess weight gain in proportion with the height of a person. Obesity increases the risk of sleep apnea as the soft tissues of fat in throat pressurize the inner airway causing blockage in breathing during sleep. Obesity and sleep apnea are correlated to each other. If one suffers from one disease, the chances of the other disease are doubled.
Shape of the throat: Physical attributes like shape of the air passage is also responsible for the occurrence of this disease. If the shape of trachea is narrow, it can lead to frequent cessation in the flow of air during slumber. This is due to the bone and skull structure. Another factor that causes sleep apnea is the enlargement of tonsils.
Parenchymatous lung disease: Any kind of deposition of fluid in the alveoli arrests the proper inhale and exhale of air, especially, during sleep. The accumulation of fluid intervenes with the pulmonary gas exchange and respiratory system of the body. This type of disorder may suddenly erupt in acute pulmonary edema or in emphysema.
Dysfunction of brain stem: Any form of malfunction caused in the primary and secondary brain stems which initiate the process of respiration can cause the development of this disease in the body of the patient.
Drugs and sleep apnea: The depressants of central nervous system are responsible for apnea and hypoventilation. Medicines like Benzodiazepines result in the malfunction of respiratory system. Usage of neuromuscular blockers like Curariform may lead to the eruption of sudden apnea due to paralysis of respiratory muscles.
Anaphylaxis and entry of a foreign body inside the trachea: Anaphylaxis is a chemical reaction which can lead to respiratory irritation, wheezing, urticaria and intercostals retractions. All these irritations cause apnea. Blockage of air passage due to the entry of a foreign body can lead to the obstruction in inhalation and exhalation.
Sleep apnea is caused due to numerous bodily disorders, it is not easy to diagnose as seldom it is traced by the patients. However, various treatments and medicines are available in the market which can visibly reduce the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea. If the disorder is persistent, then a doctor’s advice is recommended.
