There are many types of thyroid diseases that trigger in people at all ages. The most affected ones are women. Improper functioning of the thyroid gland is the basic cause behind all the thyroid related problems due to which the thyroid gland is unable to produce energy regulating hormones T3 and T4.
Thyroid goiter is one of the most common thyroid diseases that are caused due an increased production of hormones. Enlargement of the neck or the thyroid gland reflects the emergence of the disease. The basic cause behind this problem is the deficiency of the iodine in the body which results when you do not intake a diet rich in iodine. The thyroid gland requires enough iodine to secrete ample amount of required hormones.
An over production of the TSH or thyroid stimulating hormone can also cause thyroid goiter. Thyroid stimulating hormone is an essential one which comes from the pituitary gland in the brain. This makes the thyroid gland really large in size. The increase in the production of TSH also shows the defective structure of the hormone synthesis inside the thyroid gland.

There are many types of thyroid goiter that are detected nowadays. Some of them are cancerous others are non cancerous. In some mild cases they can be seen as disfigurement in front of the neck others may create breathing difficulties by compressing the windpipe itself. Swallowing also gets problematic when the person is suffering from goiter. Blood tests are suggested for diagnosing the disease. Radioactive therapy and sometimes surgery is recommended by many doctors as a treatment of goiter

Common symptoms of thyroid goiter are:

  • Neck enlargement
  • Severe cough and cold
  • Hoarseness in the voice
  • Problem of breathing and swallowing.

Most of the thyroid problems are detected using blood tests. Some doctors many suggest a patient to go for a radioactive or ultrasound scanning for correct diagnosis of the problem before starting any treatments. Surgery is the final solution if the problems are left undiagnosed for several years. Thyroidectomy is a surgery performed in severe cases.

Though most of the treatments that are recommended are simply based on chemicals some doctors may suggest herbal cure to heal the problem from its root cause.
