Our thyroid gland is located in the lower part of the neck almost below the windpipe or trachea which is also as Adam’s apple. This gland secretes hormones that are responsible for controlling the metabolic rate of the body by which the food is burnt.
When the thyroid gland stops performing this basic function and results in either over or under production of hormones, this causes various diseases like hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroid cancer and goiter. All these problems can be easily treated if are detected on time. For proper diagnoses doctors many suggest few tests such as:
Blood examination: The level of thyroid stimulating hormones or TSH has to be done by blood test. These hormones are generated by the pituitary gland to control the production of the other thyroid hormones T3 and T4 and also to regulate the growth of the follicular cells. Blood test can detect the severity of the problem by showing a normal or abnormal level of the hormones.
Ultrasound: This scanning is also suggested many times by the doctors as in this method sound waves penetrate through the body to check the growth of the neck. Nodules are monitored using this technique and even the nature of cancer can be checked as well.
Physical Check ups: A through detection is done in this process where almost all the surrounding areas are covered like the lymph nodes, throat and neck areas which may have swelling and unusual growth. This examination is done to detect the presence and growth of nodules that are the root cause of cancer and other thyroid disease.
Scanning by radioactive iodine or Radioactive Iodine scan (RAI): This method is used to check the presence of the cancerous cells in the thyroid gland. It is performed by swallowing little amount of radioactive iodine which settles down in the thyroid gland and a camera is then used to check the existence of abnormal cells.
Genetic Testing: A screening is done using blood or genetic tests to check RET gene in the body which can be passed from parents to children. The RET gene can cause medullary thyroid cancer.
Biopsy: It is a sort of surgery in which some tissues are either taken off or are replaced. Which tissues will be removed it depends on the abnormality level of them.
Positron Emission Tomography or PET: This method is used in severe cases specially to detect the tumor cells inside the body. A vein is used by which some radioactive sugar is inserted inside which can be absorbed by the abnormal cells. This again is used to diagnose the severity level of the cancer.
