T3 Thyroid

The thyroid gland located in the front of the neck is a small gland made up of two halves called lobes that lie along the windpipe. The function of this gland is to take iodine from the foods and convert it into thyroid hormones T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). Thyroid cells present in the body absorb iodine and combine it with the amino acid tyrosine to make T3 and T4. These hormones are then released into the blood stream and are transported throughout the body. T3 and T4 hormones are responsible for maintaining the rate of metabolism of the body at which the food is burnt by converting oxygen into energy. Therefore, every cell of the body depends upon the thyroid hormones for proper regulation. If the thyroid is performing efficiently, it will generate more amount of T4 hormone than T3 and rest of the T3 is produced by T4 only. Our body requires more of T3 hormone than T4 because it contains more strength than T4.

A hormone named TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is also produced by our pituitary gland inside our brain to perform the function of producing T4 and T3. This production is in process when in the hypothalamus, T4 is converted to T3. T3 mainly inhibited TSH. The thyroid gland releases more amount of T4 than T3, so plasma concentration of T4 are 40-fold higher than those T3. T3 is mostly formed by deionization of T4 of about 85%. This process involves the removal of iodine from carbon 5 on the outer ring of T4. Thus, T4 acts as prohormone for T3.
The increased level of T3 or triiodothyronine causes many complications in pregnant women. Undergoing an estrogen therapy or the use of oral contraceptive pills gives rise to the level of T3 in the body without giving any effect in the concentration of free T3.
Anabolic steroids, lithium, phenytoin, antithyroid drugs, androgens and propranolol are anibiotics that can decrease the T3 measurements. If more thyroid nodules are present in the thyroid gland it will lead to an increased production of thyroxine (T4).
Common solutions that already very much popular and are being used by many patients involve a temporary use of suppressive thyrostatics medication and a later use of permanent surgical or radioisotope therapy.
Mostly doctors recommend their patients for taking T4 supplement or T4 rich medications only without the combination of T3 as T4 is automatically converted to T3 in other tissues by the thyroid gland but this creates more problems as some people become depressed when they take just T4 and their depression can be cured when they take both thyroid hormones, T3 and T4. A natural supplement rich in both the hormones can cure your problem in an effective way. Click here to more about the treatment.
